After <strong>the</strong> peak of activity surround<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> kill <strong>the</strong> pride fell <strong>in</strong>to a trough of great <strong>in</strong>-activity for <strong>the</strong> next few days mostly loung<strong>in</strong>g<br />

around <strong>the</strong> lower end of Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cross; only rally<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir strength aga<strong>in</strong> on <strong>the</strong> 21 st . The first sign that <strong>the</strong>ir stomachs weren’t<br />

weigh<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m down as much anymore was early <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g when <strong>the</strong> pride headed towards Amboseli for a roll around <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

grass as <strong>the</strong> sun rose. All of <strong>the</strong> pride that was except A<strong>the</strong>na, who was struggl<strong>in</strong>g quite severely by this po<strong>in</strong>t with <strong>the</strong> limp to her front<br />

right leg. However, some 30 m<strong>in</strong>utes later she did emerge over <strong>the</strong> brow of <strong>the</strong> hill by waterhole one a few hundred metres away from<br />

where <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs were play<strong>in</strong>g. Content to know <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs were still close by she stopped and found<br />

a tree to rest under.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der of <strong>the</strong> day very little of A<strong>the</strong>na was seen; her signal was still be<strong>in</strong>g picked up <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same area, but she’d clearly<br />

found some deep cover to hide from <strong>the</strong> midday sun. The rest of <strong>the</strong> pride had returned to Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cross.<br />

By late afternoon, A<strong>the</strong>na f<strong>in</strong>ally emerged from her rest<strong>in</strong>g place and was found at waterhole one. After dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g for a few m<strong>in</strong>utes she<br />

limped a few metres and began to moan softly, apparently unable to go any fur<strong>the</strong>r. But a few m<strong>in</strong>utes later, Narnia, Nala and Kenge<br />

responded and could be seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> distance mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir way up Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cross as A<strong>the</strong>na gamely hobbled ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

15 metres or so. But as she did so, a herd of impala also began mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir way down from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side of <strong>the</strong> vlei. She paid <strong>the</strong>m no<br />

m<strong>in</strong>d, and lay next to an anthill wait<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. After a quick greet, Narnia and Kenge carried on to waterhole one for a quick<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>k – but Nala stopped <strong>in</strong> her tracks on spott<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> herd about 50 metres away. But <strong>in</strong> such an open area <strong>the</strong>re was no chance; she’d<br />

most def<strong>in</strong>itely been spotted.<br />

Next to appear was Kwali who sat between Nala and A<strong>the</strong>na; also with an eye on <strong>the</strong> impala. But <strong>the</strong>y were safe – with enough<br />

distance between <strong>the</strong> two parties, <strong>the</strong> impala cont<strong>in</strong>ued on <strong>the</strong>ir way. At <strong>the</strong> same time, Phyre was on her way to jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> A<strong>the</strong>na party;<br />

she spotted <strong>the</strong> impala – but this time, <strong>the</strong>y had not spotted her and she <strong>in</strong>ched closer <strong>in</strong> a low stalk. At 20 metres out, <strong>the</strong> warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

snort went out and <strong>the</strong> impala dashed back <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y had come. Kwali was <strong>in</strong>stantly on her feet as Phyre relentlessly chased <strong>the</strong><br />

herd back up Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Cross before <strong>the</strong>y dived past her and headed back down. As Phyre ran out of steam, Kwali was on-hand to take<br />

up <strong>the</strong> baton and flew after <strong>the</strong> herd. She was too far beh<strong>in</strong>d to pose a serious challenge though.<br />

The commotion had brought first Ashanti and <strong>the</strong>n Milo to <strong>the</strong> group, and despite be<strong>in</strong>g spread out over some 60 metres as each<br />

picked a rest<strong>in</strong>g spot <strong>the</strong> pride now formed a r<strong>in</strong>g. As <strong>the</strong> sun came down on ano<strong>the</strong>r day for <strong>the</strong> pride, A<strong>the</strong>na began to roar from her<br />

anthill and was quickly accompanied by <strong>the</strong> N sisters of Nala and Narnia, Kenge and Ashanti were soon on <strong>the</strong>ir feet add<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir weight<br />

to <strong>the</strong> chorus, before Milo stood to take his position centre stage and bellowed his 10 cents worth for all <strong>the</strong> world to hear.<br />
