MANITOULIN ISLAND
Located on the Northern Ontario
side of Georgian Bay, a ferry
ride from Tobermory on the Bruce
Peninsula, Manitoulin is Northern
Ontario’s best-kept secret. The
world’s largest freshwater island,
it is the gateway not only to the
north, but also to Canada’s First
Nations heritage. Here you can follow
the Great Spirit Circle Trail, which
encompasses eight First Nations
communities. Browse Aboriginal
galleries and stores, sample authentic
cuisine and attempt traditions such
as beading or spirit rock painting.
Year-round opportunities for outdoor
adventure abound here too, with the
island a beacon for for cyclists and
hikers, drawn to enjoy the scenic
winding roads and magnificent trails.
In the winter it's a favourite spot
for cross country skiing, ice fishing,
snowmobiling, skating and curling.
