Paintings in the Collection of Henry Clay Frick
[1925]
Illustrated catalog containing descriptions of 89 works on display at One
East 70th Street. Includes a supplemental list of paintings at the back of the
volume. While no author is identified, research indicates the catalog was
compiled by James Howard Bridge at Henry Clay Frick's request. The catalog
bears no date, but based on the paintings described within, it is inferred to
be the second edition, which appeared in 1925. A copy of the first edition of
this catalog, published in 1915, can be found in the Henry Clay Frick Art
Collection Files, The Frick Collection/Frick Art Reference Library Archives.
See: Henry Clay Frick Papers, Series: Voucher Files (Nos. 5053, 5204, 5221,
and 7835) for printing and binding charges in connection with the first
edition of this catalog.
Subseries V: Works Not Purchased, 1897, 1911-1919
This subseries contains correspondence, lists, notes, descriptions, vouchers, invoices, and customs forms
documenting works offered to Henry Clay Frick for purchase. Reasons for rejection are not always given.
Some are due to the high cost of the work being offered, while others relate to questions of authenticity,
or a lack of willingness on the part of the owner to sell. This is not a complete list of works offered to Frick.
Other examples can be found in the Correspondence series of the Henry Clay Frick Papers, and the Henry
Clay Frick Art Collection Files. Materials in this subseries are arranged chronologically.
