Dear Parents;
From the Superintendent
The passage of our 2006- 2007 school budget provided us with the ability to continue the high level of services the Howell Township
Public School District provides to its students. This would not have occurred without the huge support we received from our parents,
staff members, and administrators. Clearly, it was your hard work and dedication that made the difference in this climate of state
deficits and unwieldy school funding formulas.
With your support, we are able to maintain our maximum class sizes, technology initiatives, transportation services for all students,
and athletic programs. Ultimately, it is our students that are the winners.
We have met with our legislators and apprised them of the severe impact that the school funding formula is having on our taxpayers.
We are carefully monitoring the special legislative sessions that are scheduled to occur this summer to specifically address this issue.
Without significant changes in the way the public schools of New Jersey are funded, we will continue to need to seek ways to reduce
services to be able to meet the increasing costs of contractual obligations, special education, state mandates, and utilities.
On a more positive note, we have much to celebrate! Each year we add to our district’s list of accomplishments and take pride in the
successes of our students and staff. We have watched our students receive recognition in academics, fine arts, technology, and athletics.

Student Recognitions
Anna Erickson, a third grader from Ardena Elementary
School, won first place and $150 in the “Draw A Cover
Contest,” sponsored by
Music K-8 Magazine.
Anna’s design was
chosen as the winner
from more than 14,000
entries from the United
States and Austria.
The Board of Education
honored Anna during
their Student Recognition Ceremony on May 17, 2006.
She received a certificate from Principal Deborah
Pennell, while her family cheered from the audience.
Southard Celebrates
50th Anniversary
Southard commemorated
their 50th anniversary
during a week of special
events. The celebration
kicked off with the
renaming of the bus lane,
which is now known as
Stallion Way.
Honored guest speakers
included Senator Robert
W. Singer, Mayor Joseph
DiBella, and Dr. Enid
Golden, Superintendent.
Southard invited retired
staf f m e m b e r s a n d
administrato r s t o t h e
assembly also.
The school’s history was
told by Barbara Lashley,
and several students from
each grade level read
essays regarding “What
Southard Means to Me.”
Mary Jo Smith wrote
two songs for the special
occa s i o n i n c l u d i n g
Southard’s School Fight
Song. S t u d e n t s a l s o
participated in the closing
of a time capsule, which
contains many items that
today’s students use, play
with, and enjoy. This
capsule will be opened in
2056.
Devin Salvante, a second grader at Ardena, was chosen as
one of the 411 finalists in the 2006 contest. Both students
were highlighted in a recent edition of Howell Times.
