CALCULATING THE SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF LIQUIDS.<br />

FIRST.—Take a thin bottle that will hold three or four ounces; 1 paste<br />

strips <strong>of</strong> paper on two opposite sides and weigh the bottle accurately,<br />

marking the weight in grains, 2<br />

on one <strong>of</strong> the strips. Then weigh in the<br />

bottle just 1000 grains <strong>of</strong> distilled water at a temperature <strong>of</strong> 15.6° C.<br />

(60° F.) and mark the strips <strong>of</strong> paper on each side <strong>of</strong> the bottle just at<br />

the surface <strong>of</strong> the water, when the bottle is standing perfectly level.<br />

Mark 1000, the weight <strong>of</strong> the water, under the weight <strong>of</strong> the bottle and<br />

add them together for the gross weight, then empty the bottle and it is<br />

ready for use.<br />

SECOND.— Having brought the liquid to be calculated to the required<br />

temperature, 15.6° C, (60°F.), pour it into the bottle previously used,<br />

until its surface comes just level with the water-level marks on the strips<br />

<strong>of</strong> paper; then weigh it accurately, noting the gross weight in grains.<br />

THIRD.— Find the difference between the gross weight <strong>of</strong> the first and<br />

second operations. If the weight <strong>of</strong> the first operation is greater than the<br />

second, subtract the difference from 1000 and point <strong>of</strong>f three places as<br />

decimals. If the weight <strong>of</strong> the first operation is less than the second, add<br />

the difference to 1000 and point <strong>of</strong>f three places as decimals.<br />

EXAMPLE 1. The gross weight <strong>of</strong> a bottle with 1000 grains <strong>of</strong> water is<br />

1723 grains; the gross weight <strong>of</strong> the same volume <strong>of</strong> a liquid in the same<br />

bottle is 1671 grains. What is the specific gravity <strong>of</strong> the liquid ?<br />

1 A long-necked bottle, that 1000 grains <strong>of</strong> water will fill into the neck, is the most<br />

accurate. Specific gravity bottles, made very light and designed to hold 100 or 1000<br />

grains, or 50, 250 or 500 grammes, may be obtained <strong>of</strong> dealers in chemical ware.<br />

2 Metric weight may be used instead <strong>of</strong> grains. Grains are mentioned because<br />

American druggists are so much more familiar with this weight than with the metric<br />

system.<br />
