and policies <strong>of</strong> equality, co-<strong>operatives</strong> have historically had limited participation from<br />

women and o<strong>the</strong>r under-represented groups such as Aboriginal peoples and people with disabilities.<br />

Under-representation is particularly notable in <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> leadership and decision<br />

making. This historically disproportional representation <strong>of</strong> men and women, as demonstrated<br />

by co-operative guild history, and o<strong>the</strong>r under-represented groups still persists today.<br />

This paper discusses <strong>the</strong> current <strong>for</strong>ces <strong>of</strong> globalization that are challenging co-<strong>operatives</strong><br />

to embrace diversity. <strong>Diversity</strong> can enable co-<strong>operatives</strong> to be more adaptable to change.<br />

It can also be a source <strong>of</strong> fresh ideas and innovation in <strong>the</strong> organization, all <strong>of</strong> which will<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> co-<strong>operatives</strong> in <strong>the</strong> global market and increase social cohesion in communities.<br />

<strong>Network</strong>ing <strong>Diversity</strong>: Including Women and O<strong>the</strong>r Under-Represented Groups in <strong>Co</strong><strong>operatives</strong><br />

examines problematic issues that need addressing, such as overcoming heterosexism,<br />

discrimination, and barriers in management positions. Finally, this paper provides examples <strong>of</strong><br />

areas where <strong>the</strong> co-operative sector has overcome boundaries <strong>of</strong> differences to meet <strong>the</strong> needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> under-represented groups, while becoming successful organizations in local communities.<br />
