Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted
Words by Sophie Leahy
It is a dream common to children around the world to leave responsibility, homework and chores
behind to run away and join the circus. What if it were also the dream of animals? That is exactly
what the four-legged heroes of Madagascar 3 do, in their endless journey to return home.
In 2005, the world of cinema was introduced to the
loveable Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris
Rock), Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria
the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith). These crazy creatures
spent their entire lives living in New York Central Zoo,
completely pampered and spoilt, with no notion of what life
in the wild is really like. They escape and find themselves
in Madagascar, of all places. Since then, this motley crew
have been trying to get back home to the Big Apple.
Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted is the third film in
the franchise, and the gang are yet to make it home. Still
padding around Africa, the ragtag bunch snorkel to Monte
Carlo and crash a casino in pursuit of a group of penguins
and their monkeys. This accidental casino hijack puts
them in the sights of French animal control officer Captain
Chantel DuBois. A breathtaking chase through Monte
Carlo ensues, as our heroes try every trick in the book
to evade the villainous DuBois. Fortunately, the group
find refuge in a travelling circus, a situation that offers the
perfect cover.
The group have already charmed their way into the
hearts of kids around the world, and they certainly do not
disappoint in their European escapade. The film offers an
entire circus of tricks, hilarity and excitement, with neverending
chases, crazy misunderstandings and pure, animal
love. With its snappy script and animated acrobats, this is
a film for kids and adults alike.
