Maine Mines and Quarries Maine Geological Survey Katahdin Iron Works Maine Geological Survey In the mid 1840's, Katahdin Iron Works began operations to smelt bog iron. This view of the brick charcoal kilns was taken from atop the furnace. At the peak of operation, sixteen of these kilns rendered cords of wood down to the charcoal that fueled the furnace.
