University of Minnesota School of Nursing faculty and students, with
engaged community partners, will showcase research studies and
evidence-based clinical innovations discussing implications for practice,
policy, and enduring research.
University of Minnesota School of Nursing Research Day is committed to
advancing nursing science and scholarship as the foundation for practice.

After attending, participants will be able to:
• Describe nursing and interdisciplinary research and evidence-linked
initiatives in the School of Nursing and the health care community.
• Investigate ways these innovations can be used to optimize health
outcomes in clinical practice, health policy, and research.

Antonia M. Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN
Professor and Nola J. Pender Collegiate Chair
Associate Dean for Research and Global Affairs
University of Michigan School of Nursing
Dr. Villarruel is a bilingual and bicultural nurse
researcher with extensive research and practice
experience with diverse Latino and Mexican
populations and communities. Her research
focuses on the development and testing of interventions to reduce
HIV sexual risk among Latino youth. She developed an effective evidencebased
intervention to reduce sexual risk behavior among Latino youth
titled ¡Cuídate!, or Protect Yourself! This program will be disseminated
nationally by the CDC as part of their Diffusion of Evidence Based
Interventions program.
Villarruel has vast experience in designing and testing culturally specific
sexual risk reduction interventions and has been the PI and Co-PI of five
randomized clinical trials for Latinos. In addition, she is a grantee
of the CDC’s Replicating Effective Programs (REP) project, where she
had direct experience in the packaging and dissemination of evidencebased
programs.
Villarruel has worked with many communities on decisions they encounter
as they work with evidence-based interventions in their communities, and
has evaluated and contributed to the process and outcome evaluation.

Nurses with Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees play a vital role
in improving health care through developing and implementing
innovative new models of care including advancements in health
informatics, improving access to care, interprofessional work,
as well as safety and quality.
To showcase major systems change projects that move from academic exercises
to sustainable contributions, the University of Minnesota School of Nursing
introduces the DNP Innovation Institute. The Institute will feature the significant
contributions of DNP-educated nurses on improving health care and clinical
practice and illustrate how to make an idea sustainable by highlighting innovative
evidence-based projects that solve real-world problems and improve patient care.
