REPORTER at large starts on page 3 Jazz Series Gets the Boot After a successful two and a half year run, regretfully, the weekly jazz series at Riverspace Arts in Nyack has been cancelled due to costsaving programming cuts brought about by the economic crisis. As the series sponsor, Rockland County Jazz and Blues Society is grateful to Riverspace for having provided us with this opportunity to serve the community. Our mission at RCJBS is simple and straightforward: to promote the heritage, performance, and appreciation of Jazz, Blues, and related music forms in Rockland County and neighboring communities. We support Jazz and Blues musicians and audiences in the region by creating opportunities for performances at various venues, and through identifying sources of funding to support the creation of new musical works by area musicians and composers. We also strive to develop the Jazz and Blues musicians and audiences of the future—through education, mentoring, and an appreciation of music history, so that the music remains a vital and relevant cultural force in the region. We also believe that it is even more important to provide consistent music and arts programming to the community during times of economic difficulties, and are committed to doing so. We are therefore pleased to announce that the community jazz series will be moving across the street to Olive's, located at 118 Main St., Nyack, NY. e new series will begin at Olive's on May 7, from 9pm to midnight, with scheduled events on the first & third ursdays of each month. Continuing the popular format begun at Riverspace, most events will consist of a featured jazz artist joining the excellent house rhythm section for one set followed by a jam session. e Music Charge is only $5, and musicians get in FREE. And—at Olive’s, there is a full bar, extensive food menu, micro brews, and WiFi! We hope that the many friends we've made at Riverspace over the years, as well as any and all music lovers in the area, will join us at Olive's in continuing to support a consistent, ongoing venue for live Jazz and Blues in Rockland County. —Richard Sussman, President Rockland County Jazz & Blues Society, Inc. www.rocklandjazzandblues.com ✫ [Editor’s note: in addition to heading up the Rockland County Jazz & Blues Society, Mr. Sussman is an acclaimed musician.] The Nyack Villager May, 2009 9
