Donations of basic food and personal items are always welcome and cash donations are used to order from the Kansas Food Bank each month. You can donate fruit, eggs, butter, cottage cheese, canned tuna & chicken, peanut butter, sugar free items, tea bags or instant, deodorant, dish and laundry soap, shampoo, toothpaste, trash bags. Items can be dropped off at Baptist Church. Once again, thank you to our little community for the generous donations to help others! Registration and a social hour will start at 6:00 pm and will be in the lunchroom (commons area). The dinner will be served at 7:00 pm and will be served by the Sophomore class. Tickets are $10.00 and are available at Allegre‘s Drug store in Lebo (620-256-6122). Please purchase tickets by Monday, May 19th. The class of 1939 will be honored for the 75th anniversary of their graduation. The oldest alumni attendee will also be honored. M a y 1 , 2 0 1 4 The Lebo Light P a g e 9 We‘re right in the middle of Turkey season, but it‘s also time for fishing! The early spring is a hot time to catch one of the most prized game fish in the area. The crappie is a fun fish to catch, especially right now and for the next few weeks. We are a few weeks into the crappie spawn and right now they are hungry and very protective of their spawning beds. It is also a great fish for young fishermen to learn and hone their fishing skills. Lakes, rivers and most ponds around here are loaded with crappie. I would recommend live minnows, or you can drag a bright crappie jig through the water. Following the crappie feeding frenzy comes the catfish spawn, which isn‘t quite as exciting, but if you like catfish, it‘s a good time to fish for them. I have always heard that the catfish spawn starts about the time hedge tree leaves are the size of a squirrel‘s ear. I haven‘t been out to check any hedge tree leaves yet, so I‘ll leave that up to you. Heck, I haven‘t had a chance to even hunt turkeys yet (too much college writing to do this semester). Hopefully I‘ll be able to report turkey kills next month. I‘m looking forward to the camping season this year too. I bought a camper last year and only got to make it to one outing, but expect more weekends this year. The grandkids love it, so there‘s motivation itself! Believe it or not, it‘s a little more involved than tent camping, but a WHOLE lot more comfortable…and we like comfortable! I hope your 2014 outings are fun, relaxing and safe. See you out there! Students must pre-register for the course in order to get directions to complete the online portion of the certification. Either call the contact, an email address may be available or visit www.safehunters.com for online registration for some classes. Students must complete the online portion of the course: (https://programs.ksoutdoors.com/prg/ P r o g r a m s / H u nt e r - E d uc a t i o n - Certification) prior to attending the field day. Each student will be issued a pre-test over the online materials. All students will be tested over the internet course material. This pre-test will be administered at the beginning of the Field Day. A passing score of 22 correct answers out of 25 questions is required to proceed with the rest of the course. Students failing to achieve the minimum score of 22 will be dismissed from the class. The field walk session will be as much like an actual hunt as possible. It is recommended to wear boots or walking shoes and long pants. ANGLERS FOR VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS Fishing‘s Future and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism are looking to enlist up to 40 anglers who want to become volunteer instructors to teach fishing techniques. Interested anglers should enroll in the instructor course that will be taught on May 17 at Lake Henry in Clinton State Park, 798 N. 1415 Rd., Lawrence. The course will run 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. and although the class is not a requirement to teach, those in attendance will be given valuable information about working with children, sample curriculums, and tips for preparing a class or clinic. Other topics covered in the four-hour class will include current fishing rules and regulations, species identification, fishing ethics, equipment, knot-tying, casting, fish habitat, aquatic nuisance species, and conservation. Anglers interested in registering can sign up at fishingsfuture.org. Parking will be available on the hill above Lake Henry. The lot by the lake is reserved for disabled anglers. If there is inclement weather, the course will be moved to the park building.
