While OCSEA administers
the union’s
scholarship program,
the Les Best Scholarship, an outside
panel of independent judges
makes the award determinations
to ensure fairness and impartiality.
This year’s distinguished
panel of judges included Petee
Talley, Secretary-Treasurer of the
Ohio AFL-CIO and national board
member of the A. Philip Randolph
Institute; Stephanie Sanders,
Associate Director of Enrollment
for The Ohio State University,
who oversees OSU’s competitive
admissions policies; and Jill
McNaughton, retired guidance
counselor from Grandview Heights
High School. This is the third year
this distinguished panel has judged
the contest.
The Les Best judges score each
applicant using a point factoring
system that takes into account
the following: For the Members
and Spouses categories, judges
score based on 1) an essay and
2) community service. For the
Dependents category, the point
factoring system is based on 1) an
essay, 2) community service and
extra curricular activities, and 3)
grades. Scores from each judge are
added together and then averaged.
The top score-getters from each
category are awarded the scholarships.
“During these hard economic
times, we must do everything we
can to support families who are
struggling to make ends meet. The
Les Best Scholarship program is
one way we do that,” said OCSEA
Board of Directors’ member Doug
Mosier, whose committee, the
Membership and Public Affairs
Committee, oversees the program.
“Every year, we get some
sensational applicants. We wish we
could give more,” said Mosier.
"Thank you so much for awarding me
the OCSEA Les Best Scholarship! I really
do appreciate the award, because it
takes a huge financial stress off of me,
with college being so expensive!"
