Silversmith and watchmaker; Apprenticed about 1781 to Thomas Harland in Norwich CT Master to Jabez Baldwin abt 1790 in Northampton MA; Master to Zalmon Aspinwall abt 1790 in Northampton MA. He was a partner from 1791 to 1792 with Samuel Stiles in Northampton MA as STILES & BALDWIN, Advertised in the Hampshire Gazette, 6 Jul 1791, offering his services as a goldsmith. He was a partner from 1792 to 7 Jan 1794 with Nathan Storrs in Hanover NH as BALDWIN & STORRS. Advertised in the Spooner's Journal (New Hampshire), 7 Oct 1793, informing the public that he had ". . . served a regular apprenticeship making and repairing watches and clocks, together with plate and jewelry, and begged to inform the public of Hanover and towns adjacent that he proposed carrying on business near Dartmouth College, a few rods South of printing office." He also offered "the highest price given for old gold, silver, brass, copper, and pewter." He worked from 1794 to 1811 as a silversmith and watchmaker in Hanover NH Appointed from 1796 to 1811 as Postmaster in Hanover NH He worked 1811-bef 1818 as a silversmith in Fairfield, NY He worked from 1818 to 1820 as a silversmith and watchmaker in Morrisville NY He worked in 1834 as a silversmith and watchmaker in Rochester NY 3 Pleasant Street, Hanover, NH - 1800 (‘Green Store’) (‘Howe Bookshop’) Jedediah Baldwin of Northampton, MA, had the shop built on Main Street. The building stood two stories high and had a small dance hall above, occupying a lot two rods wide at the south end of the Storrs lot. Thus it was the third building down from Wheelock Street and occupied the present site of the Davison Block. The shop replaced a 1795 two-story shop burned in 1800: John Robie and Baldwin's watchmaking shop had occupied that building, with tailor Herman Pomeroy renting the second floor. Baldwin also built the house at 8 Lebanon Street; he used his Main Street building as the Post Office during his tenure as postmaster from 1797-1811. Townspeople knew the building as the "Green Store." The shop passed in 1811 to John Wheelock, who left it to Princeton Theological Seminary out of spite for the College during the controversy that ended in the Dartmouth College Case. Several others used the building after Wheelock, including the Post Office into the 1850s and Howe's Bookstore in the 1860s.
