WARRANT: The warrant in possession of the Lodge is dated June 15, 1848. The name or number has never been changed. MINUTES: Not intact; all records from the organization of the Lodge to December 1854 are missing. THE PETITION. "To THE HONORABLE "The Grand Lodge of the State of New York: The memorial of the undersigned York Masons in regular standing in and near the village of Mexico, Oswego County, State of New York, respectfully represent that from the best information they can obtain Lodge No. 307, of this place, at the instance of your former officers under the excitement growing out of anti-masonry, suspended work in 1827: "Under the circumstances of the case we respectfully ask that this may he taken into consideration in granting us a new warrant should the same he necessary under the surrender herewith of the old warrant. 16
"We respectfully ask that the following names he authorized and empowered to organize a Lodge in this place: "BEZALEEL THAYER, Master. DAVID GOIT, Senior Warden. BENJAMIN GREGORY, Junior Warden. "Bezaleel Thayer. A. Skinner. Benjamin Gregory. D. P. Spooner. Joseph Bloomfield. Simon Leroy. David Goit. S. Hosmer. Louis Hutchings. Bradley Higgins. Charles Benedict." The petition has the following endorsement: "Oswego Lodge, No. 127. May 16. 5848. "At our regular communication this day this proceeding was had: "BRO. THAYER presented a petition to the Grand Lodge signed by eleven master masons of the Town of Mexico, requesting the erection of a Lodge in that place and soliciting the recommendation of this Lodge. It was then Resolved, That this Lodge cordially respond to the request and that the proper officers of the Lodge be directed to sign said recommendation. "Attest. P. F. PARSONS. Master. "EDWIN W. CLARK, PHILO STEVENS, S. W." "Secretary. It will be noted that the petition refers to a "Lodge, No. 307," which had formerly existed at Mexico. This Lodge was known as Mexico Lodge, No. 307: it was warranted June 6, 1818; in 1827 its warrant was declared forfeited and was surrendered. On May 3, 1906, the Grand Lodge granted the request of Mexico Lodge. No. 136, for the return of the old warrant, and this old document is now in possession of the Lodge. From the records and old papers on file in the Grand Secretary's office it would appear that the old Lodge encountered some difficulty in securing a warrant. On November 14, 1806, a petition was prepared signed by the following: William Cole. Anson Tennant. Martin Kellogg. Haynes Bennett. Samuel Cherry, Jr. Martin Way. Gardner Wiman. Samuel Cole. Samuel Bradner. Under date of February 2, 1807, it was recommended by Roman Lodge, No. 82 (now extinct). For some unexplained reason this effort was unsuccessful; a dispensation was issued but they failed to obtain a warrant, as shortly after this another petition signed by the following was presented to the Grand Lodge: Peter Pratt. Samuel Bradner. Levi Mathews. Gamalial Barnes. Shubal Alford. Endorsed upon the petition is the following: "To the Right Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the State of New York. "This will most humbly certify that I, JOSEPH HEATH, named in a warrant with BRO. SAMUEL CHERRY, issued by DEWITT CLINTON, ESQ'R., Grand Master of Masons in the State of New York, Did by the help of two other past Masters on the twenty-fourth day of June in the year of Masonry Five Thousand Eight Hundred and Eight, at the dwelling house of Br. SAMUEL ROGERS in the Town of Mexico. County of Oneida and State of New York, install Br. HAYNES BENNETT. Master, and BRO. ANSON TENNANT, Senior Warden and Br. SAMUEL CHERRY, Junior Warden of Mexico Lodge, all in due form and I, having made my returns of said doings and the said warrant in obedience to the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge agreeable to the rules and regulations of the Grand Lodge of this State, on a dispensation for making masons which dispensation has since lapsed. "I having examined the said Lodge, its doings, back vouchers and papers, finding they have made nine regular masons in due form, the funds of the Lodge stand thus—is now worth seventy-five dollars and fifty cents after defraying expenses for jewels, etc. "We now most humbly take the liberty to recommend to the favor of the Grand Lodge their petition to be further authorized by warrant of Constitution for legally making masons and doing all other things appertaining thereto agreeable to the rules and regulations of the Grand Lodge of the State of New York. Instituted at Mexico the 14th October, 1809, and of Masonry Five Thousand Eight Hundred and Nine. " Jo's HEATH." On March 7, 1810, the petition was read in the Grand Lodge and referred to the Grand Officers and on March 15th the dispensation was renewed for another year. For the second time it failed to obtain a warrant and in 1811 another petition was presented to the Grand Lodge signed by the following: Stephen D. Morse. William Cole. Luther Franklin.
