flanked by boulder ridges which provide hard substrate<br />

for the <strong>coral</strong>s that colonized around 9 000 years ago<br />

(Figure 7). Several hundred individual <strong>reefs</strong> formed by L.<br />

pertusa extend more than 14 km along the entire ridge<br />

structure measuring 2 to 30 m in height (Mortensen et al.,<br />

2001; Freiwald et al., 2002).<br />

A typical Lophelia reef consists of three major<br />

subhabitats (Figure 8).<br />

One of the most obvious features when diving with<br />

a submersible over a cold-<strong>water</strong> reef is the species<br />

richness and abundance of the fish community compared<br />

with the off-reef seabed (Costello et al., in press; Husebø<br />
