S.L.A.G.S AND CHILL-OUT Spring has sprung, and with the sun high in a blue sky, we recently trolled across the poof-packed grassy knoll to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern for the legendary Sunday tea dance and gathering of the South London Action Girls Society (S.L.A.G.S.). As always, the venue was packed to the rafters with homos paying homage to the legend that is the D. E. Experience. As if at a religious encounter, they dutifully and exuberantly mouthed back all the words as if scripted. As the house lights dimmed and the stage lights came up, D.E.’s antipodean twang started ad-libbing to ‘Shower You With Kisses’, a bejewelled mic appeared through the red velvet tabs and we were off on a rollercoaster of current affairs, comedy, classics and club anthems. Her twist on the week’s news (‘rent boy at the Vatican scandal’) featured strongly, brilliantly set off against a version of Alanis Morissette’s ‘Ironic’. There was also a special duet of ‘Something Stupid’ with her partner in crime, Simon Le Vans (who was celebrating his birthday). Next up was part 2 of the evening, the ‘Chill-out’ section, with dance anthems and commercial house from DJs Andy Almighty and Sean Sirrs. Don’t forget that there will be extra S.L.A.G.S and Chill-Out sessions over the coming bank holidays, with an extended party on Easter Sunday (4 April), followed by further anthems on Monday 5 April. www.rvt.org.uk
