<strong>Timber</strong> for use <strong>in</strong> <strong>Playspaces</strong><br />
<strong>Timber</strong> available for use <strong>in</strong> playspaces <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
timber that has been treated with:<br />
ACQ (Ammoniacal Copper Quat)<br />
CA (Copper Azole)<br />
LOSP (Light Organic Solvent Preservative)<br />
suitable for out of ground contact<br />
Hardwood varieties of timber may also be used<br />
although may be more expensive. Eco wood<br />
made from recycled plastics are also available.<br />
When purchas<strong>in</strong>g timber for the construction of<br />
play spaces ensure that the products are treated<br />
with an APVMA approved preservative (such as<br />
ACQ, CA and LOSP) that does not conta<strong>in</strong><br />
arsenic compounds or purchase timber eg.<br />
hardwood that has natural resistance to rott<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and termites. Reta<strong>in</strong> treated timber purchase<br />
documentation as part of your playground safety<br />
management system records.<br />
To f<strong>in</strong>d out what timbers are naturally rot<br />
resistant and recommended for landscape<br />
applications contact your nearest timber supplier.<br />
It is recommended that all timber is landscape<br />
grade and nails, screws etc. are galvanised.<br />
Ensure timber is dressed and f<strong>in</strong>ished smooth to<br />
elim<strong>in</strong>ate spl<strong>in</strong>ters .<br />
It is recommended to ensure children wash their<br />
hands thoroughly with soap after play<strong>in</strong>g outside<br />
particularly if <strong>in</strong> contact with CCA treated timber.<br />

For playground equipment constructed with CCA<br />
treated timber and <strong>in</strong> good condition, it is<br />
recommended to coat with an oil-based<br />
polyurethane or pa<strong>in</strong>t as a regular ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />
item to seal the treated timber. It is also<br />
recommended for all timber items to be coated<br />
with an oil-based polyurethane, pa<strong>in</strong>t or l<strong>in</strong>seed oil<br />
to prolong longevity of the timber.<br />
Regularly <strong>in</strong>spect timber items such as equipment,<br />
forts, jounc<strong>in</strong>g boards etc. for:<br />
Wear and tear—repair or replace timber as<br />
required<br />
Splitt<strong>in</strong>g—caulk gaps or replace timber as<br />
required<br />
Spl<strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>g—sand smooth to remove<br />
spl<strong>in</strong>ters and burrs on a regular basis<br />
Water penetration—repair and seal timber.<br />
Replace timber when required.<br />
Protrud<strong>in</strong>g nails, screws and bolts—ensure<br />
that nails are embedded or f<strong>in</strong>ished flush to<br />
the surface, screws are countersunk,<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ished flush to the surface or domed<br />
headed screws are utilised. Where domed<br />
headed bolts are used ensure threads do<br />
not protrude more than 8mm. Check that<br />
threads do not conta<strong>in</strong> burrs or spl<strong>in</strong>ters—<br />
sand to a smooth f<strong>in</strong>ish. <strong>Kidsafe</strong> <strong>NSW</strong><br />
recommends the use of sta<strong>in</strong>less steel<br />
self-tapp<strong>in</strong>g screws to secure timber boards<br />
etc.<br />
