Two Events Marking Significant Transitions
At The Friends Schools
After much hard work from our teachers, workers and staff,
and after many lessons learnt, challenges transcended, and
numerous meetings and debates held, the school year has
ended. I take the opportunity to thank all our staff – teachers,
administrators and workers alike, for their efforts that made
this year a successful one.
The school also bid farewell to its dear 12 th graders – all 82
of them who joined a most special centennial graduation
ceremony; so profound, it brought tears to many eyes in the
audience. The ceremony’s keynote address was delivered by
Dr. Hanan Mikhail-Ashrawi -- herself a graduate of the Class
of 1964.
Major changes in one's environment can be unsettling at
any stage in life. But for young adolescents who ended
their elementary school years, the thought of leaving their
childhood school and moving to the middle level school can
evoke much anxiety.
Our Sixth Graders shined on the 6 th of June and their
‘graduation’ ceremony was most special with parents’ and
teachers’ pride evident on faces everywhere. They shared
mixed feelings during the ceremony as they know they
will miss their school where, for many, they’ve spent the
past 8 years of their childhood but will also know that the
FBS challenges are waiting ahead. FBS will certainly be
a different experience for them on many fronts: a different
campus where they are the youngest class in school, more
homework and teachers who treat them as young adolescents.
I wish our future 7 th graders all the best in their middle and
high school experiences to come.

Dr. Ashrawi re-iterated the irrefutable impact the Friends
education has had on her personally and on all its graduates
throughout the past 100 years. The Class of 2006 valedictorians
eloquently expressed their feelings and gratitude to their
families and school with very powerful speeches that caught
the attention of all.

During commencement, the Annual Citizenship Award was
initiated in recognition of the 100 th graduating class. The award
will be granted annually to the student who demonstrates the
qualities beyond academic achievement that are in harmony
with the school’s values of respect, community service and

Continued from page # 1
The commencement ended with a most moving ceremony
commemorating the beginning of the 2 nd centennial era of graduates.
A passing of the torch service involving 10 of our Alumni, each
representing a decade, was most touching. Our graduate of 1929,
Mr. Zuhdi Hashweh, lead the procession of 10 Alumni onto the stage,
each lighting their candle from our 1 st centennial torch. The light
was then passed to our 2006 graduates who in turn passed it on to
our Principals, future graduate (our 11 th grader Jamal Bajali), FUM
Interim Secretary General (Sylvia Graves) and Citizenship award
recipient (Zaki Saadeh). Together and with much anticipation,
they lit up the Friends School Second Centennial torch receiving
the warm applause of the audience. The ceremony ended with the
singing of the school song and later a reception which included a
cake listing the names of all our 82 graduates was held. One hundred
balloons were finally released into the skies – each representing
one graduation class at FBS -- starting in 1906 and ending in 2006.
It was certainly an afternoon that brought much pride to all and that
I’m certain will be remembered by many for years to come!

Even though the year is coming to a close that is not to say
that the excitement at the Friends School is “closing” as well!
There are still lots of things happening on campus. .
Congratulations to Khalil Hussary and Marina Tucktuck!
It is now official that these students are the recipients of
two individual scholarships for an year-long exchange
program at Quakers schools in the U.S. Next year Khalil
will be attending Westtown School and Marina will be
at the George School, both in Pennsylvania. We are so
excited and proud of you! Good job!
The season has come for college acceptances to start
pouring in, and . . . they have! A short list of a few

Welcome home to Yazan Nahhas, Yasmine Khoury, Yousef
Alem and Amer Saadeh! During the last week of April these
four students traveled to New York to represent the School and
their work at the Brooklyn Film Festival. They were part of a
joint documentary project with the Brooklyn Friends School,
titled “Two Students, Two Schools.” Their film came second
in the festival and has been placed for showing in two other
competitions! Great job and thank you to all of our friends
associated with the Mary Williams Fund. If it weren’t for you,
it would not have been possible.
