More A-level Choice
Choose to study A-levels at the College and you’ll have access to the
widest range of A-level subjects across the county as part of the North
Pembrokeshire Federation. We’ll treat you like an adult and you’ll be
encouraged to study independently but our team of highly qualified teachers
will always be on hand to provide help and support when you need it.
College students receive the best support (officially ‘Grade 1’) in preparation
for university and careers. Our A-level students consistently gain good
A-level results and receive substantial help in completing their UCAS
applications, resulting in excellent progression opportunities to degree courses
at the UK’s top universities. Helping students to gain progression to medical
degrees is a particular speciality of the A-level support staff at the College.
More Level 3 Choices
Although A-levels are the traditional route to university, Extended
Diplomas are gaining popularity as an alternative. Diplomas offer a
practical method of studying at advanced level. Students are continually
assessed through project work, practical tasks and assignments. An
Extended Diploma is worth 3 A-levels.
17 BTEC Extended Diplomas (worth 3 A-levels)
Studying for an Extended Diploma is another route that could secure you
a place at university. Students often comment that having completed the
diploma in the subject area they are pursuing makes the first year of a
degree much easier.
Extended Diplomas available at
the College include:
• Animal Management
• Art and Design (Fashion and Clothing)
• Art and Design (Interactive)
• Art and Design (Graphics)
• Business
The choice is there for YOU...
After GCSEs, school leavers have more choice than
ever to study a breadth of A-level courses in the
county. The Federation has grown considerably
during the past four years. It now consists of
Pembrokeshire College, Sir Thomas Picton, Tasker
Milward, Portfield Special School, Ysgol Dewi Sant
and Ysgol Bro Gwaun. Within the Federation there
is close liaison including the alignment of timetables
and free transport between the centres to allow
young people to make the most of the provision
available.
Widened Choice
Through the Federation, young people have access to the
widest choice of A-level subjects possible - a total of 33 AS
and 30 A2s, see previous page for course list.
Future Development
The College is committed to continuing to work with the
Federation to ensure that young people looking to
undertake A-levels are aware of the opportunities
available to them in all of the participating centres.
“Through continuing to put
resources into promoting and
developing the Federation young
people will have the greatest
opportunity to pursue their
university and career ambitions.”
Dr Geoff Elliott, Director of Marketing, Skills
and Development at the College.
How it works
You decide which subjects to study, timetable
dependent...
1. If two subjects are delivered at school, for example
Taskers, and the other at the College, you
register as a Tasker Milward pupil.
2. If however, you study two subjects at College and one
at Sir Thomas Picton, you then enrol as a student of the
College.
3. Another scenario - you decide to study two
subjects in one centre and two in another, then you
decide which centre you enrol at.
Whatever the combination, the centre will be responsible for
your transportation to the next centre (with the exception of
students travelling between the College and Tasker Milward).
The Welsh Baccalaureate
The Welsh Baccalaureate adds a valuable dimension to
14-19 year olds courses and subjects. This qualification
combines personal development skills alongside A-levels or
NVQs. Many employers and universities in both England and
Wales, recognise this award (individual entry requirements
vary, please check before applying).
This subject is optional when students enrol on two or more
A-levels at the College, it is compulsory in schools.
Don’t forget...
GCSE high-flyers can apply for a £2,000 scholarship.
Pembrokeshire College is offering ten scholarships
up to the sum of £2,000 for full-time 16-19 year old students
studying level 3 Science, Engineering and Mathematics related
subjects. To gain access onto the scholarship programme
students will need to have gained GCSE A* or A grades in
Science, Mathematics and Technology related courses and
must attend a panel interview. See website for terms and
conditions – www.pembs.ac.uk/finance

Earn & Learn - Foundation &
Advanced Apprenticeships
Research shows that apprentices earn, on average, over
£100,000 more throughout their lifetime than other
employees (source: apprenticeships.org.uk). In order to
follow the apprenticeship route into employment, prospective
students need to be employed within the relevant sector. If
you need to find an employer we may be able to help, as the
College has strong links with industry, especially within the
health, childcare and energy sectors.
As employees, apprentices earn a wage and work alongside
experienced staff to gain job specific skills. Apprentices can
choose from varying models of course delivery, from
work-based assessments to college based lectures.
Excellent Industry Partnerships:
The College has developed, and continues to foster,
excellent working relationships with industry. This enables
the College to continuously keep courses up-to-date and
relevant to industry and helps our students to gain
employable skills.
The College is proactive in a number of ways. It
communicates regularly with the UK Sector Skills
Councils – the employer-driven organisations that together
articulate the voice of the employers of around 90% of the
UK’s workforce on skills issues. College management and
staff play important roles within various industrial groups
and committees including:
• Pembrokeshire Energy Sector Workforce Development Group
• Construction Management Panel
• Tourism and Hospitality Workforce Development Group
• Care Council for Wales
Apprenticeships can take between one and three years to
complete depending on the level of apprenticeship, the ability
of the apprentice and the industry sector. Most of the training
for a Foundation Apprenticeship (Level 2) takes place in the
workplace and is equivalent to five GCSE passes (grades A-G). A
Foundation Apprenticeship is regarded as the principle means
of training for jobs requiring skills at NVQ Level 2. Students
taking the Advanced Apprenticeship (Level 3) route can
progress to university courses, such as a foundation
degree. For more information on apprenticeships visit
learners, employers and the Welsh economy as a whole.
success at College, university and in the workplace. All
students are made aware that self-discipline is an essential
priority and a prerequisite to obtain high standards of
work, behaviour and results. There is a clear disciplinary
procedure with an ultimate sanction of exclusion. Students
are expected to strive for 100% attendance, be punctual at
every timetabled session and adhere to the College’s
standards of behaviour.
The physical evidence is apparent as you walk onto the
College campus. Over recent years the College has added
new buildings and facilities to meet the needs of its learners
including an Innovation Centre, a Construction Centre and
a redevelopment and extension to the Engineering wing, all
part of the College’s ambitious and visionary 10-year estate
master plan costing £30m.
Sports Academy
The Sports Academy is designed to offer talented individuals
the opportunity to further their sporting prowess alongside
their academic studies. The netball, football, rugby and golf
academies are comprehensive programmes which develop a
student’s knowledge of training and skills towards elite
performance and include:
The evidence: no graffiti or damage to
property at the College
Staff and students are proud of the modern, clean,
well-lit, spacious environment at the College. Students
wear appropriate clothing according to their course, and
while the College does not enforce a uniform, students are
encouraged to adopt a mature attitude towards their
appearance.
Tutorial and learning support
During your time at College you will be supported by a team
of professionals and you will have access to the following:
• Skills and performance development
rugby player and coach Kevin Hopkins. Kevin coordinates
coaching across all sports with the aim of developing
sporting excellence at Pembrokeshire College.
‘We said...
school it doesn’t have to mean
an end to your favourite sport.
student or an apprentice, join
our sports teams and come
along to play a variety of games
both at home and away!!”
We can match your
aspirations…
As parents, we know you want the best for
your son or daughter. At the College we
believe that young people need to learn
to manage their own time, explore their
options and find out what they are
really good at. The College works to inspire
young people to develop a passion for
their subject in an award-winning
environment that makes a real
contribution to students’ aspirations.
Students are supported through their
studies by a combination of subject and
personal tutoring with regular feedback.
Evidence that this approach is working is
available through our excellent student
results, Estyn inspection reports and a
strong but supportive student disciplinary
strategy.
Students have two tutors: a class tutor and a
personal tutor. Each student regularly meets
their personal tutor on a one-to-one basis. These
meetings monitor attendance and progress and
set targets. A copy of the agreed outcomes can
be accessed online by the student and act as a
steering and monitoring device prior to the
following meeting.
Experienced tutors
The College has an enthusiastic and highly qualified
team of tutors and lecturers. We pride ourselves on
the professionalism and expertise of our
staff. They are drawn from many occupations
and professions and bring with them a wealth
of experience from industry in addition to their
qualifications. Teaching methods are based on
sound, evidence-based research and are regularly
appraised by a process of internal and external
quality control.
College life
The environment in the College is much more akin
to that of university, giving our students some
experience of adult independence but in a supportive
and controlled way. Students are encouraged
to develop their learning skills and become better
managers of their own time and work. Deadlines
are set and expected to be met to ensure that all
students achieve their qualifications.
In this section, we hope to provide
Financial support for learners
All our courses for under 19s are fully funded.
Furthermore, 16-18 year olds may qualify for an
Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) of up
to £30 per week, based on a household income of
£23,077 or less per year.
For those over 18 and living in Wales, an Assembly
Learning Grant (ALG) is available. These funds are
designed to help support students who might
otherwise experience financial difficulties whilst
studying. The funds are means tested and students
whose family’s net income is less than £18,370 per
year may receive between £300 and £1,500 for an
academic year. The Financial Contingency Fund is
administered by the College and is designed to
support those who may require financial assistance
to complete their course. The fund covers additional
costs like buying specific equipment, uniforms, books,
etc. Household income must be £23,000 per year or
less.
*All grants and funding is dependent on
government policy and support and may be subject to
Q&A
Q. My child is high achieving and has done
well in school. Will my child have the same
academic opportunities in the College as if
they had stayed on in school sixth form?
A. For many years College students have been
progressing to top universities throughout the UK
including Oxford and Cambridge. If a young person
has the ambition and aptitude, we will provide the
support to ensure they reach their potential.
Q. What sort of disciplinary and behaviour
rules exist in the College?
A. Students are encouraged to obtain 100%
attendance at the College and be punctual at every
timetabled session. Registers are taken every
session and students with unauthorised absence are
automatically contacted by our attendance
trackers. Any student whose attendance drops
below 85% is subject to disciplinary procedures.
The College encourages all its students to take
personal responsibility for their learning and to
adhere to the College’s code of behaviour. The
College offers an opportunity, particularly for young
people, to develop their behaviour and time
management skills that are so critical for success at
university or in the workplace.
Q. My child may need additional learning
support, what does the College offer?
A. See the support page of this brochure where you’ll
find information on the support we offer to learners.
Q. We live outside Haverfordwest, what
transport is available?
A. There is an extensive transport system in place
which is free for full-time learners aged under 19
wishing to attend the College. Transport is
provided from nominated pick-up points for
students meeting the distance criteria of three
miles or more. The routes cover a wide area of
the county, however, due to Pembrokeshire’s rural
nature it is not always possible to arrange a
pick-up close to the homes of all learners. Students
are required to make their own way to and from the
nearest pick-up point. Every effort is made to keep
this distance as short as possible.
Q. Will a BTEC Extended Diploma allow my
son or daughter to progress to university?
A. Yes, in fact many students comment that having
completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in the subject
area they are pursuing makes the first year of a
degree much easier.
Q. Will my family continue to receive
benefits if my child leaves school to
attend the College?
A. Yes, if your son or daughter is in full-time
education whether in school or the College. Students
can also apply for assistance through the Education
Maintenance Allowance (EMA) to provide some
support during their studies. Apprentices may be
considered to be employed, rather than have
student status. Therefore, if your son or daughter
is considering an apprenticeship scheme you would
need to discuss the possible impact on benefit
entitlement.

Winners
2011/12 &
those who
inspire...
What makes our lecturers stand out in their
field of teaching and learning? Real-life work
experience, coupled with academic and vocational expertise;
the perfect formula to help students stand apart from the
rest. In todays competitive job market the College has a
responsibility, not only to ensure students complete their
courses, but to also prepare them for university or
employment.
Our lecturers have a breadth of work experience,
that brings a unique insight to their teaching. For
example - Dr Helen Coomer, Science lecturer, was a member
of the Unilever research team that launched Persil Small &
Mighty, Eleri Hunt, Beauty lecturer, is a contributing S4C
beauty presenter and Tim Lambert, Music Technology
lecturer, has worked with many musical artists including Take
That and Madonna, whilst Kevin Hopkins, one of our Sports
lecturers, played for Wales seven times!
Our tutors realise the importance of achievement
by inspiring students to compete in regional and
national competitions. They know this is one way of
enhancing the student’s college experience and to showcase
student talent above and beyond their studies.
We know that winning competitions helps
student CVs to rise to the top of the pile! Students
compete annually at competitions including - WorldSkills,
BOC, AHT (hairdressing), Biology Olympiad, Salon Cymru,
Construction Skills, EESW (engineering), Welsh Culinary
Championship, Rotary Chef of the Year and our Sport
Academy teams are consistently playing in regional and
national leagues.
