Patients with prior abdominal
operations, large abdominal wall
hernias, cardiac disease or
high BMI’s may have their operation
performed through an open incision.
These
conditions may make laparoscopic
surgery technically challenging or
excessively long,
increasing the risk of organ injury,
blood clot, heart attack, and other
complications.
These incisions are vertical, usually 6
to 8 inches long in the upper part of
the abdomen.
