Course Loads for R.A.s, T.A.s, P.A.s and Fellows<br />
An R.A. or Fellow must carry a full graduate load (8-12 credits per semester, and at least<br />
2 graduate credits, typically <strong>Physics</strong> 990, in the summer) until dissertator status is achieved.<br />
T.A.s and P.A.s are expected to carry a minimum <strong>of</strong> 6 credits. It is recommended that T.A.s<br />
take only 6 credits during their first semester in graduate school followed by 9 credits<br />
each subsequent semester until dissertator status is reached. No student should take<br />
three core courses in one semester. Note: All students must receive advisor approval <strong>of</strong><br />
courseload prior to enrolling each term.<br />
Summer Session Enrollment<br />
<strong>Grad</strong>uate <strong>Student</strong>s who have served as graduate assistants with tuition waivers during<br />
the previous academic year enjoy the same waiver during the Summer Session. A student<br />
holding a research assistantship during a Summer Session must be concurrently registered<br />
for at least two credits. <strong>Grad</strong>uate students who are T.A.s during the Summer Session do<br />
not have to be registered; however, the department recommends that all students register<br />
for summer to obtain summer university privileges and for tax reasons. Dissertators<br />
must register for three credits in the summer if they will graduate that summer term.<br />
The three credits do not have to be in Research 990; however, coursework taken must<br />
reflect strongly on the student’s area <strong>of</strong> research and be an upper graduate level course<br />
(numbered 500 or above) approved by the advisor.<br />
