FSA/PHEASANTS FOREVER/NRCS CRP INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON MAY 29 Pheasants Forever, NRCS, and FSA will be teaming up to conduct a public informational meeting on the new CRP Sign-Up at 6:00 p.m. on May 29 at the Murdo Tech Center. USDA ANNOUNCES 45TH GENERAL SIGN-UP FOR THE CONSERVATION RESERVE PROGRAM The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will conduct a four-week general sign-up for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), beginning May 20 and ending on June 14. Additional signups for continuous CRP programssuch as Highly Erodible Land Initiative and Initiative to Restore Grasslands, Wetlands and Wildlife-will start May 13. Currently, about 27 million acres are enrolled in CRP, which is a voluntary program available to agricultural producers to help them safeguard environmentally sensitive land. Producers enrolled in CRP plant long-term, resourceconserving covers to improve the quality of water, control soil erosion and enhance wildlife habitat. Contracts on 3.3 million acres of CRP are set to expire on September 30, 2013. Producers with expiring contracts or producers with environmentally sensitive land are encouraged to evaluate their options under CRP. 2012 NAP & ACRE PRODUCTION DUE JULY 15 Producers must annually provide (if not appraised by a NAP appraiser) the quantity of all harvested production of the crop in which the producer held an interest during the crop year. We have sent out the “NAP Yields” form and CCC-658 form which lists your acres and a spot for you to record your production. The deadline for reporting this production is July 15, 2013. Master Gardener news: May 2013 Donna Adrian We have finally started to see some warm weather. We couldn’t plant our potatoes on Good Friday like we are led to believe that we should, but it is not too late to go ahead and get them in the ground now. As we start deciding what to plant where it is generally a good idea to divide the garden into three areas containing the following groups of crops: the perennial crops (asparagus, rhubarb, winter onions, chives and garlic) by placing them at one end of your garden so they will not be disturbed from year to year. The short-season, (early planted crops) plant at one end of the garden to make it easier to replant for a fall crop, after these crops are harvested. Short-season (the cool season) crops include peas, spinach, lettuce, beets, kohlrabi, radishes, onions, cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. These can stand a light frost. Long-season crops (warm season) are vegetables that require most of the growing season to mature. Examples of long-season vegetables are tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, vine crops, and sweet corn. Plant tall-growing vegetables far enough away from lowgrowing vegetables so they don’t shade them. Planting tall vegetables on the north or east side of the garden also will reduce the shading of shorter crops. (Lettuce and similar greens may be grown in partial shade in mid-summer.) Start small! A 4 ft. by 6 ft. garden that can be easily managed may produce more than a large one that has become overgrown with weeds or simply is harder to keep watered. Block/Wide rows vegetables are particularly suited to wide row planting these include root crops such as carrots, radishes, beets, turnip, and rutabaga, and leafy crops such as lettuce and spinach. Change the location of the garden or that of the individual crops within the garden from year to year to help reduce insect and disease problems and to make better use of fertilizer in the soil. Because they are closely related and can carry the same diseases, do not plant potatoes, eggplant, peppers, or tomatoes where any of the four were the previous year. The same principle follows for members of the cole crop group (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc.) and the cucurbit group (melons, pumpkins, squash, gourds, cucumbers.) North-south rows may reduce the shading of adjacent rows by taller plants. Planting in a block, however, can save space and make it easier to meet crop needs. Block planting is also recommended for optimal pollination of wind-pollinated crops such as sweet corn. Paint-South Dakota volunteers to revitalize homes in Murdo and 21 other communities Farm Credit Services of America announces earnings Farm Credit Services of America (FCSAmerica), a financial cooperative with more than $19 billion in assets, announced financial results for the first quarter of calendar year 2013 on May 2. Net income for the first quarter was $110.1 million compared to $108.7 million for the same quarter in 2012. The increase in net income is primarily due to an increase in net interest income from loans partially offset by an increase in staffing related expenses. Loan volume decreased by $156.3 million during the first quarter of 2013 to $18.333 billion. Members’ equity increased to $3.333 billion from $3.224 billion at the end of 2012. “In spite of volatility in the agricultural markets and widely varying weather conditions, producers continue to show resiliency in the face of many challenges,” said Doug Stark, president and CEO. “As a financial services cooperative, we continue to build strenth so we can sustain the needs of our customer-owners and support the communities in which they live.” Across South Dakota, volunteers are picking up paint brushes and setting aside free time to help residents in their communities to maintain the value and livability of their homes. The groups, using primer and paint donated by South Dakota Housing Development Authority, are repainting homes whose owners are physically or financially unable to handle the project themselves. Paint-South Dakota, in its 16th May is National Military Appreciation month year, is a statewide program that matches volunteers with homeowners that need help. This year, 19 groups are painting 25 houses in Andover, Bison, Box Elder, Canova, Centerville, Edgemont, Frankfort, Hot Springs, Hoven, Huron, Lead, Murdo, Newell, Nisland, Plankinton, Rapid City, Redfield, Roslyn, Stickney, Sturgis, Vale and Watertown.Volunteer groups include churches, municipalities, community development Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed a proclamation declaring May as National Military Appreciation Month. May is a time to recognize the sacrifices and successes of those who have served in the Armed Forces, both past and present. “The vigilance of the members of the Armed Forces has been instrumental to the preservation of freedom, security and prosperity enjoyed by the people of this great nation,” the Governor’s proclamation states. “The success of the Armed Forces depends on the dedicated service of its members and their families.” National Military Appreciation Month includes: Loyalty Day (5/1), Victory in Europe Day (5/8), Military Spouse Appreciation Day (5/11), Armed Forces Day (5/18), and Memorial Day (5/27). Each of those days provides an opportunity to learn more about military members and the families that support them. “This month is dedicated to all of our military men and women and their families, and it also provides an opportunity to educate our youth on the historical importance of the Armed Forces,” said Maj. Gen. Beede is an exciting and humorous speaker. “Youth can expect to not only experience all of these things, but they should all laugh yourself to tears. Past audience members have literally fallen out of their chairs laughing,” Rider said. The success and leadership strategies teens will learn at Beede's talk are based on his highly acclaimed book, “Climb On! Success Strategies for Teens.” Since graduating from Wheaton College, Ill., with a bachelor’s degree in communications, he has become the owner of two companies, John Beede International and Sierra Nevada Publishing House. He has also been an instructor of rock climbing, whitewater rafting, wilderness survival, sailing, mountaineering, and has participated in dozens of expeditions and adventures around the world.
