If a student took the placement test more than three years ago, the student may take the placement test as a “new” student. High school students who test as a sophomore, junior, or first semester senior may take the placement test a total of three (3) times in a 3-year period if they desire. This allows students to complete additional coursework in high school to further develop their math and English skills. The student must identify himself/herself as a high school student when taking the test for the first time. Procedure for Retesting 1. The student is encouraged to complete a test review in the subject area he or she wishes to retest in. Students can find the test review by visiting our website at www.pittcc.edu Click on the link to Academics to the link to Admissions and then click the link to Placement Tests which is found on the left hand side of the page. Test review information is available in the Admissions Office and in the Placement Testing Office. 2. The student requesting to retest should contact his or her curriculum Admissions Counselor or the Testing Coordinator. If an advisor suspects misplacement, the advisor should contact the Testing Coordinator to request the retest. 3. The Admissions Counselor or Testing Coordinator should check DATATEL for previous test scores. 4. If the student or Admissions Counselor feels that the student should take a test other than the main test being administered, the Counselor should contact the Testing Coordinator to request special accommodations. 5. Students are encouraged to avoid retesting during the week prior to and the week of any registration period. New students will be given priority during those periods. VI. TRANSFERRING TEST SCORES TO/FROM OTHER COLLEGES PCC accepts ASSET, COMPASS, and ACCUPLACER placement test scores from other colleges if testing occurred within the last three years. Because schools administer different parts of the tests, some additional testing may be required for placement. In addition, reading and writing scores (from schools that do not use a multi-measure) will be combined to determine the beginning English course for a student. PCC’s cut scores will determine the student’s placement regardless of the placement recommended by the school where the test was taken. Score reports from other schools can be mailed, faxed, or hand delivered to the Testing Coordinator. Procedure for Releasing Test Scores from PCC Students who have taken ASSET, ACCUPLACER, or COMPASS at PCC may request that their scores be sent to another college. There are two ways in which scores will be released. 1. A student presents a valid picture I.D. (driver’s license, passport, school I.D., etc.) to the Testing Center and completes a score request form. A copy of the test scores will be given to the student. 2. A request can be made in writing either by mail or fax directly to the Testing Coordinator. A Score Request form can be found on our website. The request must include ALL of the following information: 4
a) Type of scores to be sent (COMPASS, ASSET, or both) b) Date of testing c) FULL address of the party receiving the scores (if being mailed) d) Name of person receiving scores e) Fax number if appropriate f) Student’s social security number or PCC student ID number g) Student’s full name (printed) h) Student’s phone number i) Student’s signature Fax or mail request to: Sharon Ceres-Testing Coordinator Phone: 252-493-7561 Pitt Community College Fax: 252-321-4592 P.O. PLACEMENT IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEST POLICY______ ***THIS IS AN OPTIONAL TEST FOR STUDENTS WHO MEET THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS*** (SPANISH AND FRENCH ONLY) The Foreign Language Placement Test/Challenge Test/Credit by Exam Test is available for current PCC students. Students must review the information on these tests located at http://www.pittcc.edu/academics/programs/arts-and-sciences/foreignlanguages/Placement_Testing.html and follow all proper procedures prior to contacting the placement testing office for an appointment. COLLEGE LEVEL MATHEMATICS PLACEMENT TEST (CLM) PLACING OUT OF COLLEGE ALGEBRA ***THIS IS AN OPTIONAL TEST FOR STUDENTS WHO MEET THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS** Students who place out of developmental coursework in math may self-select to take the ACCUPLACER College Level Math test (CLM). Only students in the highest percentile should be encouraged to attempt this test. Students who score 86 or higher on the CLM will be referred to the Chair of the Math and Physics Department for course placement and advising. 5
