West Midlands aircraft [EC135P2] will relocate to work from Wolverhampton Airport creating<br />

a two aircraft unit with Central Counties (West Mercia and Staffordshire)<br />

[EC135P2]. Both aircraft currently work under the Central Motorway <strong>Police</strong> Group banner;<br />

If the unit was not mentioned in the original listing – as in the case of Central Counties,<br />

Cheshire, Chiltern [at RAF Benson, Oxford], Cleveland, Devon & Cornwall, East Midlands,<br />

Greater Manchester, Humberside, Lancashire, Metropolitan <strong>Police</strong>, Northumbria, North Midlands<br />

and North Wales and West Yorkshire - they remain largely as they are now with their<br />

current aircraft but they will in time lose identity and change airframes for newer ones when<br />

displaced from other areas.<br />

There are thorny decisions to be made over the supply of services. The helicopter fleet is<br />

likely to settle on to one type, but this is going to take years. Engineering support likewise<br />

will reflect the mixed fleet but, because they are older, the number of MD Explorer’s will<br />

dwindle quickly. Whether the in-house engineering [as at Devon & Cornwall] will survive has<br />

not been announced. The Essex and Suffolk arrangement certainly seems doomed.<br />

And then there are the people who work at the locations. There will be many displaced pilots<br />

and observers.<br />

Among the positives may be the ‘final solution’ of that long standing argument over which<br />

downlink capability to standardize on. They currently comprise a mix of analogue and digital<br />

equipment in two separate chunks of spectrum and are not interoperable. The key to the<br />

kingdom is the Ministry of Defence, the license holders for the leased spectrum. There is a<br />

need for a common standard [and presumably a common supplier] at a cost around £10M a<br />

year for the lease. That is without costing the across the fleet change to the common standard.<br />
