Class B rvith Noel Ward in "Mahseer"
(No. 63) leading Class A and lYing
eleventh. Dave Ward driving "Wardee"
(No. 29). another Class A boat. was having
trouble rvith his Nlercury 50 mis-firing
and he dropped astern.
To the Finish
In the leading pack norv *ere "Mongaso",
"X-Lax" and "Sunset-Strip- rvell
out ahead and norv starting to lap the tail
end Charlies. "Mongaso" crossed the
finishing line at 1.54 p.m. * hile much
was still happening behind at the West
Shseburv buov. In trouble first ivas Bob
Franks in "sunset-Strip" with his steering
gone. As the boat slerved he struck
his head on the screen and knocked himself
out. He rvas out cold for about three
minutes, but his co-driver Margaret
Walker brought him round and they limped
home-thirteenth. Horv unlucky can
you get!
It rvas here that Keith Horseman in
"X-Lax" had his bout of trouble. Around
the West Shoebury for the last time in
second place his engine stopped. Fuel
trouble-the pick up pipe in the fuel
tank had come adrift. This rras the same
trouble rvhich hit "X-Lax" in the Srvanage
race but this time Keith got her
going again quickly to come home third,
but onlv iust.
Some' feople's bad luck is another's
fortune and thrs race was no erception.
With Bob and Keith momentarily out of
the race, it left the door way open for
John Andrew in "Slo-Mo-Shun" to take
second place. llost important of all. it
gave the Driver's Championship to Carl
baruson. Carl. and his' co-driver, John
Morris in "Much-Ado" (No. 35) needed
to come sixth or better in this event to
clinch the honours. otherrvise the title
rvould go to lVlike Beard. Throughout the
race, the nearest position that Carl could
get to the front rvas seventh. He rvas still
in this position in the last lap rvhen suddenly-Bob
Franks rvas out-and he roared
across the line sixth-a very near thing
and the Driver's Chamoion for 1965.
Beeinnine to soread out now as they speed back from the West Lei8h Middle buoy and take
