THE FOUR HILLS 33<br />

buildings defended by b<strong>at</strong>tlements <strong>and</strong><br />

turrets.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y were built by Herod, <strong>and</strong> named after <strong>the</strong> friend<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r he had lost in b<strong>at</strong>tle, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wife<br />

whom his jealousy had killed.<br />

If <strong>the</strong> pilgrim scanned <strong>the</strong> city more closely, he<br />

would observe th<strong>at</strong> it was built on four hills. Of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se, <strong>the</strong> western, or ancient Zion, was <strong>the</strong> highest,<br />

rising about 200 feet above Moriah,<br />

though<br />

still 100 feet lower than <strong>the</strong><br />

Mount <strong>of</strong> Olives. To <strong>the</strong> north <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

east, opposite Zion, <strong>and</strong> divided from it<br />

by <strong>the</strong> deep<br />

Tyropceon Valley, were <strong>the</strong> crescent-shaped Acra<br />

<strong>and</strong> Moriah, <strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>ter with Ophel as its sou<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

outrunner. Up <strong>and</strong> down <strong>the</strong> slopes <strong>of</strong> Acra <strong>the</strong><br />

Lower City crept. Finally, <strong>the</strong> fourth hill, Bezetha<br />

(from bezaion, marshy ground), <strong>the</strong> New Town, rose<br />

north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Temple</strong> Mount <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Acra, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

separ<strong>at</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong>m by an artificial valley. <strong>The</strong><br />

streets, which, as in all Eastern cities, were narrow,<br />

were paved with white marble. A somewh<strong>at</strong> elev<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

footway ran along for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> those who had newly<br />

been purified in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Temple</strong>, while <strong>the</strong> rest walked in<br />

<strong>the</strong> roadway below. <strong>The</strong> streets derived <strong>the</strong>ir names<br />

mostly from <strong>the</strong> g<strong>at</strong>es to which <strong>the</strong>y led, or from <strong>the</strong><br />

various bazaars. Thus <strong>the</strong>re were W<strong>at</strong>er-street,<br />

1<br />

Fish-street/ East-street, etc. <strong>The</strong> Timber Bazaar<br />

<strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tailors were in <strong>the</strong> New City ;<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

Gr<strong>and</strong> Upper Market on Mount Zion. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were <strong>the</strong> Wool <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Braziers Bazaar ;<br />

Bakerstreet,<br />

Butcher-street, Strangers -street, <strong>and</strong> many<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs similarly named. Nor would it have been<br />

difficult to identify <strong>the</strong> most prominent buildings in<br />

<strong>the</strong> city.<br />

At <strong>the</strong> north-western angle <strong>of</strong> Mount Zion,<br />

For particulars <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se forts, see Josephus s Wars&amp;gt; v. 4, 3.<br />
