New York City Sights <strong>and</strong> Sounds Light Up <strong>the</strong> Season<br />

Lying on <strong>the</strong> couch <strong>for</strong> seven hours straight might be nice <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first two or three days <strong>of</strong> our break, but after awhile, it<br />

becomes mind-numbing. No one should waste away being a<br />

couch potato when we live in <strong>the</strong> greatest city in <strong>the</strong> world. Here<br />

in New York City <strong>the</strong>re is everything <strong>and</strong> nothing to do at <strong>the</strong><br />

same time.<br />

Rockefeller Center’s famous Christmas tree has been a part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> City’s tradition <strong>for</strong> years. The tree is lit up with thous<strong>and</strong>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> lights <strong>and</strong> you ice skating is availaable right below it <strong>for</strong> a<br />

small fee. The tree was lit this year on November 30 th <strong>and</strong> will<br />

be lit through January 6th, 2006 <strong>for</strong> your viewing pleasure. The hours are<br />

daily from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Jacky Elezja, a student at Queensborough,<br />

said, “Seeing <strong>the</strong> gigantic tree all lit moves me into <strong>the</strong> holiday spirit.”<br />

Central Park is <strong>the</strong> best known park in <strong>the</strong> City <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y have not one but<br />

two ice skating rinks. Wollman Rink is located at Central Park between 62nd<br />

<strong>and</strong> 63rd Streets. Admission is $8.50 on weekdays <strong>and</strong> $11.00 on weekends.<br />

A skate rental is $4.75 <strong>and</strong> lockers are available <strong>for</strong> $3.25. The o<strong>the</strong>r rink is<br />

Lasker located in Central Park between 106th <strong>and</strong> 108th Streets. Admission is<br />

$4.50, <strong>the</strong> skate rental is $4.37, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> locker rental is $2.53. For more in<strong>for</strong>mation,<br />

The Holiday Light Display at Jones Beach at <strong>the</strong> West End is going on<br />

from Friday, November 19th to Sunday, January 2 nd. It’s Long Isl<strong>and</strong>s drive<br />

through holiday light display. There are over one million captivating lights<br />

<strong>and</strong> dazzling displays. Hours are Monday-Thursday from dusk to 9:30 p.m.<br />

<strong>and</strong> Fridays-Sundays until 10:30 p.m. The cost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> drive through admission<br />

is $17, but you can also purchase tickets from Ticketmaster <strong>for</strong> $15 <strong>by</strong> calling<br />

631-888-9000.<br />

The Bronx Zoo also has a spectacular holiday light extravaganza. This<br />

year’s new feature is “The L<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Narnia at <strong>the</strong> Butterfly Garden.” Here you<br />

can visit reindeer, camels, tigers, reptiles, <strong>and</strong> monkeys while enjoying larger<br />

<strong>the</strong>n life lighted animals <strong>and</strong> sculptures. The nightly entertainment includes<br />

carolers, stilt walkers, ice carvers, costumed characters, arts & crafts, <strong>and</strong> storytellers.<br />

Hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. It is opened from November 18th,<br />

to December 18th <strong>and</strong> January 6th, 7th, <strong>and</strong> 8 th. December 19th to January<br />

2nd every night <strong>and</strong> only closed on December 24 th <strong>and</strong> 25th. Visit <strong>the</strong> Bronx<br />

Now if you’re looking <strong>for</strong> something really special to do with your family,<br />

friends, or significant o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>re’s always <strong>the</strong> famous Radio<br />

City Christmas Spectacular staring <strong>the</strong> world famous Rockettes.<br />

This year <strong>the</strong>re is an amazing new opening number, songs, sets,<br />

<strong>and</strong> costumes. The show will be going on all throughout <strong>the</strong> month<br />

<strong>of</strong> December <strong>and</strong> into January. Ticket prices vary from about $50<br />

up to $200, but it is more <strong>the</strong>n worth it! For more in<strong>for</strong>mation on<br />

purchasing tickets <strong>and</strong> show dates you can contact ticket master.<br />

Mat<strong>the</strong>w Amendolaro has gone two years in a row to see <strong>the</strong><br />

Christmas show. “The show is a really great live per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>and</strong><br />

its worth spending a little money,” he stated.<br />

Even shopping can get you into <strong>the</strong> holiday spirit. Everyone has to buy<br />

gifts <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir loved ones <strong>and</strong> a great way to enjoy yourself while doing this is<br />

to take in all <strong>the</strong> scenery. Instead <strong>of</strong> fighting with <strong>the</strong> person in front <strong>of</strong> you on<br />

line, take a look at <strong>the</strong> beautiful Christmas decorations in <strong>the</strong> stores <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

stunning window displays.<br />
