Although children with a <strong>19p13.2</strong> microdeletion can have challenging behaviour, parents<br />
often comment on their children’s endearing characteristics:<br />
She is a very happy little girl” – 30 months<br />
She has a fantastic personality. She is hilarious and can act out the silliest things<br />
when she can’t use words to relay information. Her imagination is great and she has<br />
the biggest heart. She has made me a better mother and is my special gift from God.<br />
My life would not be complete without her” – 6 years<br />
He has the most wonderful and cheeky smile. He engages people wherever he<br />
goes” – 7 years<br />
She is so real, raw and expressive and very, very funny. When she loves something,<br />
she is full on in love, full of enthusiasm, passion and excitement. She gets excited<br />
about things that many of us would not. When she is happy, her enthusiasm can just<br />
fill up a room. She is also very sensitive and empathy just pours from her when<br />
someone she loves is hurt or distressed” – 7 years<br />

Learning<br />
Learning disabilities are prevalent in children with a <strong>19p13.2</strong> microdeletion, although<br />
the level of impairment may vary. Behavioural disorders can affect children’s ability to<br />
learn.<br />
Amongst <strong>Unique</strong> members, all parents report some level of learning disability ranging<br />
from mild to severe, although most are on the moderate – severe spectrum. <strong>The</strong> most<br />
frequently- mentioned feature, of a <strong>19p13.2</strong> microdeletion, on the Decipher database is a<br />
learning disability. Learning problems may be accentuated if behavioural issues are<br />
affecting a child’s learning. Similarly, a delay in language development can be influential.<br />
At the age of 30 months, one child had a neurodevelopmental evaluation that revealed a<br />
mild learning disability. Intelligence quotient, or IQ, is an assessment of someone’s ability<br />
to think and reason. A score of 100 means that, compared to people of the same age, you<br />
