ZIMBABWEANS ABROAD
De Jonge set for US Open
with
Wellington Toni
Nengomasha eyes
Dynamos move
VETERAN former Kaizer Chiefs
and Bidvest Wits midfielder Tinashe
Nengomasha has told the
South African media that he
would love to wind down his
career at Zimbabwean football
champions Dynamos if he fails
to get a club next month down
south.
In the Sunday edition of the
Sun, Nengomasha, who turns 32
on September 2, says he grew up
supporting Dynamos.
“Dynamos is the team I grew
up supporting and l intend finishing
my career there,” he said.
The “General” played 261
games between 2002 and 2012 for
Chiefs and was named the player
of the year and players’ player
of the year the following season
after guiding Amakhosi to the
league title.
He signed a two-year deal at
Wits with the option of another
year, but the club has decided
not to exercise that option.
Dynamos have been
a haven for most turning players who
re-
include, of late,
Rodreck Mutuma
(Bloemfontein
Celtic), Tafadzwa
Rusike (Ajax Cape
Town), Simba Sithole
(Mamelodi Sundowns
and SuperSport United),
Oscar Machapa (Moroka Swallows)
and Takesure Chinyama
(Legia Warsaw).
As the transfer window opens
on July 1, former Caps United
and Warriors right-back Gilbert
Mapemba will also be seeking
new pastures after being released
by his struggling side Moroka
Swallows.
While others are returning
home, Highlanders’ Milton Ncube
is heading to Ajax Cape Town, Peter
Moyo (Highlanders) is joining
Mpumalanga Black
Aces while Dynamos
goalkeeper
George Chigova is
off to SuperSport
United in the
South African
Premiership.
Kuda Mahachi is headed for
Mamelodi Sundowns and is also
in line for trials at cash-rich
French Ligue One side Monaco.
Once again, we say congratulations
to Highlanders legend
Madinda Ndlovu who was last
week named the beMobile Premier
League Coach of the Year in
Botswana after winning his third
league title in a row.
Ndlovu won two titles with
Mochudi Centre Chiefs before he
moved to Township Rollers last
season, where he was unbeaten
in 28 league matches in his
march to glory.
It capped a fine year for
Madinda as his sibling Peter
also won the league title at Mamelodi
Sundowns where he is
manager, while the other Ndlovu,
Brian, saw his Coventry
United (not to be confused
with Coventry City) being
promoted to the third tier
of British football.
Little known Zimbabwean
striker Patrick
Kaunda moved
from Botswana’s FC
Satmos, where he was
the country’s top goal
scorer, to Platinum
Stars in Rustenburg.
DANIEL NHAKANISO
SPORTS REPORTER
ZIMBABWE’S leading professional
golfer Brendon de Jonge has
been drawn alongside American
Kevin Stadler and Irishman Shane
Lowry for the first two rounds of
this week’s US Open at Pinehurst
Resort in North Carolina in the
United States.
The US Open, which is the second
of the four major championships
in golf, gets underway on
Thursday with rich prize fund of
$8 million, and a winner's share
of $1,44 million.
According to the draw announced
by the United States Golf
Association (USGA) on Sunday,
De Jonge and company will tee
off from the 10th tee at 1915 hours
(Zimbabwe time) in Thursday’s
opening round.
De Jonge made his US Open
debut at Pebble Beach in 2010,
finishing in a tie for position 33,
but is yet to feature in the prestigious
championship ever since.
The 33-year-old Harare-born
golfer will be hoping to do even
better this time after putting on a
decent outing in his first appearance
the US Masters in April.
He finished in a tie for position
37 on his first appearance at
Augusta National carding rounds
of 74, 72, 76, 73 for a gross total of
seven-over 295.
The US Open which has always
been traditionally played on very
tough golf courses will, however
expected to present a completely
different challenge altogether for
de Jonge.
De Jonge will head for North
Carolina on a decent run of form,
making the cut in his last five
events including a top 10 finish
at the Wells Fargo Championship
last month.
Meanwhile, local professional
golfer Ryan Cairns managed his
first top 10 finish on the Sunshine
Tour this season after finishing
eighth in the Zambia Sugar Open
on Sunday to move into the top
50 on the Sunshine Tour Order of
Merit.
Cairns carded rounds of 72,
70, 76 and 71 at the challenging
par-73 Lusaka Golf Club courseto
tie for eighth position with South
Africa’s Titch Moore, Toto Thimba
Jnr, Riekus Nortje and Adilson da
Silva of Brazil on 3-under 289.
Cairns finished 10 shots off
tournament winner Lyle Rowe of
South Africa.
