material, and/or a videotape. Please clearly describe the content and text of the
work on a separate sheet, and include your UserID on all materials submitted.
* Software Engineering applicants: Concisely summarize your background
in software development, experience with particular phases of software
development activity, and how your industrial experience prepares you for
graduate-level academic work.
* Computation, Organizations and Society applicants: Indicate your
intended area in the first paragraph of your Statement of Purpose. For those with
industrial or government experience, please describe how this experience
prepares you for graduate-level academic work. Applicants may enclose a short
prior publication related to their research interests.
Letters of Recommendation: Submit three letters of recommendation. At least
two should be from faculty or recent employers. Recommenders should know
you relatively well and be able to evaluate the quality of your academic and
professional abilities. The admissions committee wants to know about your ability
to do independent research. You should select recommenders who can best
speak to that point. Professors who interacted with you extensively in smaller
classes are also a good choice. Employers are sometimes appropriate, but
letters that are simply character references will not provide good support for your
application.
All recommendations MUST be submitted electronically. Recommenders will be
notified once you complete the recommendation section and check the email
request box. Please inform your recommenders that they will receive an email
which will include the URL, userID and password to access the recommendation
form and that letters must be submitted in PDF format. If the recommendation is
not submitted promptly, you may send a reminder to your recommender no more
than two times. Once a recommendation has been submitted, the recommender
will not be able to access the URL again.
It is your responsibility to make certain that the recommendations have been
submitted by the January 3 deadline. Any recommendations received after that
date may not be considered in the review of your application.
