Stuart McGill & <strong>Roger</strong> <strong>Blench</strong><br />

The current count of languages, exclud<strong>in</strong>g East Ka<strong>in</strong>ji <strong>and</strong> Basa, is<br />

approximately 29. Fur<strong>the</strong>r Ka<strong>in</strong>ji languages no doubt rema<strong>in</strong> to be identified<br />

by l<strong>in</strong>guists – this has happened even by accident, quite literally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of<br />

<strong>the</strong> motorcar breakdown which brought <strong>the</strong> Damakawa language to light<br />

(McGill 2008). A summary of <strong>the</strong> major subgroups with<strong>in</strong> Ka<strong>in</strong>ji is given <strong>in</strong><br />

Table 1, along with a list<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> available documentation. The first column<br />

gives <strong>the</strong> subgroup along with an approximation of <strong>the</strong> total number of<br />

languages assigned to that subgroup; <strong>the</strong> second gives <strong>the</strong> autonym of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual language where known (Hausa names are <strong>in</strong> brackets). The betterknown<br />

languages are <strong>in</strong> bold. See <strong>Blench</strong> <strong>and</strong> McGill (n.d.) for fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation. The symbol † <strong>in</strong>dicates an ext<strong>in</strong>ct or nearly-ext<strong>in</strong>ct language.<br />
