8.1 Waste<br />
Wards 4E, 6D <strong>and</strong> 7C, are commended for achieving compliance<br />
scores in this st<strong>and</strong>ard. Ward 5F has improved <strong>and</strong> achieved partial<br />
compliance, however, further effort is required at ward level to ensure<br />
that arrangements in place for the segregation, storage <strong>and</strong> disposal of<br />
waste are adhered to.<br />
In all wards household <strong>and</strong> clinical waste was h<strong>and</strong>led <strong>and</strong> transported<br />
correctly prior to disposal. In wards 4E <strong>and</strong> 7C, household <strong>and</strong> clinical<br />
waste bins were now available in all areas to dispose of waste. A<br />
recurring issue in Ward 5F, related to the lack of availability of<br />
household <strong>and</strong> clinical waste bins in some areas.<br />
Inspectors observed that in wards 4E, 5F <strong>and</strong> 6D, waste was disposed<br />
of incorrectly. Pharmaceutical waste was disposed of into a sharps<br />
box or a magpie box, used to dispose of broken bottles, tin cans or<br />
crockery. In all wards, a black lidded burn bin was now available for<br />
the disposal of pharmaceutical waste. New issues identified were, in<br />
Ward 4E, the black lidded burn bin was overflowing with waste, <strong>and</strong> in<br />
Ward 7C a magpie box was unavailable for use.<br />
<strong>Re</strong>curring issues, in all wards inspected, related to the effective<br />
cleaning <strong>and</strong> replacement of some damaged/ rusted waste bins. In<br />
