What is the Infant Development Program?<br />

A home-based program designed to assist<br />

families to encourage their child’s<br />

development.<br />

Who is the program <strong>for</strong>?<br />

Any child from birth to three years of age<br />

who:<br />

Is delayed in his/her development (i.e.,<br />

sitting unsupported, walking, talking);<br />

May be at risk <strong>for</strong> a delay in their<br />

development;<br />

Has a known disability.<br />

Referral Procedure<br />

A referral to the program may come from:<br />

A parent<br />

A doctor<br />

A community health nurse<br />

Other community agencies<br />

Participation in the program is voluntary. All<br />

services are free of charge. If other services<br />

are needed by the child, the Infant<br />

Development consultant can help to refer to<br />

the appropriate resource.<br />

The Infant Development Program provides<br />

<strong>for</strong> your baby an opportunity to:<br />

Become more independent;<br />

Discover his/her abilities;<br />

Learn new skills.<br />

The Infant Development Program provides<br />

<strong>for</strong> parents an opportunity to:<br />

Learn methods to help their child<br />

progress;<br />

Learn more about their child;<br />

Meet other parents;<br />

Discuss parenting issues.<br />

Infant Development Consultants are<br />

professionals trained to assist you in<br />

responding to your baby’s needs. A<br />

consultant will visit you in your home and<br />

work with you to plan a program of activities<br />

to encourage your child’s learning and<br />

development. All areas of development are<br />

considered (i.e., motor skills, language,<br />

social, play and learning skills).<br />

The Infant Development Program:<br />

How does it work?<br />

Suggests activities <strong>for</strong> play-based learning<br />

to help your child make progress<br />

Provides toys on loan from our toy library<br />

Provides parent resources including books<br />

and videos on loan<br />

Runs a weekly playgroup<br />

Puts you in touch with other community<br />

professionals<br />

Provides a program of regular home visits,<br />

responsive to the family’s needs<br />

Assesses your child’s development in all<br />

areas<br />

Publishes a regular newsletter <strong>for</strong> families<br />

Offers parent education workshops on<br />

request<br />

Supports parents through the child’s<br />

transition to preschool
