CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
It was 65 years ago, when twelve individuals submitted a request to the Federal Deposit Insurance
Corporation, that the SAC Federal Credit Union was established. Since then, our membership has grown
to over 64,000 with assets of more than $500 million to become Nebraska’s largest locally owned credit
union. I’m pleased to report that, despite the difficult economic environment that continues to plague other
financial institutions, the past year has seen SAC FCU’s growth and success continue. As a matter of fact,
we were ranked among the top 20 credit unions nationally in loan growth, share growth, and loan-to-share
ratio.
Our History
1946
The original field of membership
was restricted to civilian employees
of the Strategic Air Command
Headquarters at Andrews Field,
Maryland; Credit Union employees,
members of their immediate families;
and their organizations.
While our growth and expansion has certainly been impressive, rest assured that it’s come as a result of
a well thought-out strategy to ensure our efforts are focused on generating the greatest return on assets
while ensuring safety and soundness. Every decision we make is with the best interests and needs of our
members in mind because we never forget that it’s your money. That’s why we’re also extremely pleased
to report that we continue to maintain an extremely low delinquency rate that’s less than half of the industry average.
Of course, we realize that our success and growth comes as a result of meeting the needs of our members through superior
products and service. That’s why we continue to place emphasis on employee orientation and extensive on-going training through
our Culture Development Department. We’ve also increased our focus on technology to ensure we provide the best delivery
methods possible. While we’ve increased our locations to nineteen to provide convenience with a personal touch, we want to
continue to bring the same products and services to those of you who prefer to conduct your business remotely.
While the last 65 years has been an incredible journey, I believe that the best is yet to come. With the recent approval to expand
our field of membership to include the counties of Washington and Saunders in Nebraska and Mills and Harrison in Iowa, we’re
looking forward to bringing the SAC FCU advantage to those communities as well.
I’d like to thank my fellow committee and board volunteers who contribute their time and talents in charting the course of our
Credit Union. I’d also like to give special recognition to Jean Howard for her 30 years of volunteer service and for her recent
induction into the Defense Credit Union Council Hall of Honor.
Of course, none of our success would be possible without the hard work of our exceptional staff in executing our strategy
and providing you with outstanding products and service. I think it’s also appropriate to mention how pleased we were to have
our President, Gail DeBoer, selected by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions for the prestigious and well-deserved
distinction of “Chief Executive Officer of the Year.” This award recognizes outstanding leadership and credit union performance that
places member service as its highest priority.
Finally, I want to thank all of you for selecting SAC FCU as your trusted financial partner and for your support of the credit union
philosophy of “people helping people.” While many things have changed over the last 65 years, one thing remains constant. We’ll
continue to be committed to our core values of providing you, our member owners, with a safe and sound financial institution to
meet all of your lifetime needs through competitive rates, convenient delivery methods, and superior products and service.
Jim Rockwood
Chairman
Union, organized in March of 1944,
as the Offutt Federal Credit Union,
merged with the Strategic Air
Command Federal Credit Union.
1980
The C.U. moved its Main Office to
its present location at 36th Street
and the first ATM was installed at
the Main Office.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
As I look back on the challenges SAC FCU has faced during the past few years, I am extremely pleased that
we have successfully navigated through one of the most difficult financial periods in modern history. This is
quite an accomplishment given that interest rates remained at the lowest levels in history. The Credit Union’s
prudent lending practices and conservative financial management have served us well during this difficult time.
As we look forward, SAC FCU is poised to continue to provide our members with the financial tools they need
to succeed in today’s complicated financial world. I am proud of the management team and the employees of
the Credit Union for working tirelessly on your behalf to deliver these exceptional results.
Since 1946, SAC Federal Credit Union has grown to be a leader in the credit union industry. SAC FCU has
more than 64,000 members and over $500 million in assets, ranking it as the largest credit union in Nebraska.
Through the years we have treated members as family – guiding them through financial challenges and sharing
in their life events.
The strong relationships that we have formed with our members are what have contributed to our growth and
stability. Keeping in touch with our members’ ever-changing wants and needs has allowed us to provide them with the most innovative
products and services. Our focus is to provide an outstanding experience in every branch, over the phone and on-line and to expand our
products, services and facilities to position ourselves for future growth. Much of the Credit Union resources are used to foster innovation,
provide continuous learning opportunities, develop lifelong relationships with members, proactively identify new market opportunities,
ensure financial stability and exemplify social responsibility.
The financial environment has seen innumerable changes in the past several years – in technology and delivery channels, and many
more are sure to come. However, our members can rest assured that SAC FCU will continue to be an institution upon which they can rely
and trust.
SAC Federal Credit Union’s community partnerships are evident in the strong ties it has forged with residents, community leaders,
business owners and local schools. The Credit Union has become part of the fabric of these communities, providing affordable financial
products and services and financial education, while maintaining a high profile at community meetings and events. Historically, SAC FCU
has supported numerous community organizations, not only with vital monetary assistance, but also through the volunteer efforts of our
employees.
Many improvements to our Credit Union are on the horizon, both functionally and operationally, and combined with our drive
for unmatched service we are positioned for the future. Members can look forward to these exciting initiatives: an upgraded online
membership and deposit account opening system, a new online banking system with enhanced features and improved mobile banking
application, and new initiatives to encourage children and young adults to join the credit union so future generations can enjoy the
benefits of membership. This year, mobile banking and a SAC FCU Facebook page were implemented to improve member service and
convenience through technology. Our goal remains to deliver high-quality products and service at the best possible price.
Running the Credit Union takes a collective effort of a focused team of skilled professionals. Success begins with strong leadership.
Your Board of Directors brings the business insight needed to drive the organization forward while the management team assists in
building the vision and executes the business plan. Finally, we couldn’t do any of this without our team of outstanding employees who
deliver exceptional service to our members.
The past 65 years have been an amazing journey. Whatever the future holds, be assured that SAC FCU will continue to meet your
needs, and we will always remember our proud heritage. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff, we are honored and
privileged to serve you.
SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE’S
REPORT
Each day brings new challenges to SAC Federal Credit Union. Their mission is providing the products and services to meet every stage of the
membership’s life events. The primary responsibility of the Supervisory Committee is to ensure that our Credit Union’s policies and practices are
satisfactorily protecting the assets of our membership and are in compliance with all applicable government regulations. It is also the responsibility of this
committee to ensure that our annual financial statements fairly and accurately reflect the financial position of our credit union.
The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) recommends an independent quality assurance review of the Internal Audit Department be completed
every five years and this was completed in April 2011. Following the NCUA Audit, the Supervisory Committee completely revisited SAC FCU’s auditing
procedures. This resulted in an improved auditing program. The annual independent audit and statement verification audit were completed by the CPA
firm of Doeren Mayhew. There were no major concerns reported.
The Supervisory Committee oversees the quality and integrity of the credit union’s financial statements and evaluates the performance of the internal
audit function. The Committee reviews the internal control framework of the credit union to ensure the adequacy of internal controls surrounding assets
and computerized information systems, reviews Board of Directors minutes, participates in the strategic planning, remains vigilant to what is happening
in the credit union industry, and assists with member inquiries.
The Supervisory Committee are pleased to report that SAC Federal Credit Union continues to be well managed and financially sound. Be assured that
we will remain steadfast in our focus on safeguarding member assets.
I want to thank all of the Supervisory Committee Members and alternates for volunteering their time and service. A special thank you goes to Steve
Doty, my predecessor as Chairman, for his service and dedication to the Committee.
Finally, we want to thank the membership for their confidence in, and support of, SAC Federal Credit Union. We look forward to serving you, our
members, in 2012.
Steve Williamson
Supervisory Committee Chairman
TREASURER’S REPORT
I am very pleased to report that SAC Federal Credit Union has emerged from another tough economic year with strength and endurance. SAC Federal
Credit Union has maintained a capital ratio of 8.82% based on total capital of $45 million vs. $517 million in total assets. The credit union’s total assets
grew at a rate of 14% during the past year. As other institutions were tightening credit, we continued to meet the financial needs of our members.
The credit union has had the advantage of being located in the Midwest, where the Nebraska unemployment rate was 4.1% in June, 2011 vs. the
national unemployment rate of 9.2%. Lending has been weak on a national basis, and I am proud to report that SAC Federal Credit Union had loan growth
of 17.7% during the past year. In addition to achieving the strong loan growth, we maintained our loan quality. The National Credit Union Association
(NCUA) statistical records show that the ratio of delinquent loans to total loans is .52% for SAC Federal Credit Union vs. 1.49% for our peer average;
further, our net charge-offs to average loans is .47% vs. .94% for the peer average.
1985
First Mortgage Loans were offered.
A computerized audio response
system, “MONEY TALK”, was
installed.
1986
A discount brokerage program was
instituted.
Home Equity Loans were offered to
the membership.
An Automated Loan Application
System (the first in the U.S.) was
developed and installed at the C.U.
Credit cards were offered.
1988
The C.U. returned to its roots by
opening the Building 500 Branch
at Offutt AFB.
1989
Total assets of the C.U. were over
$100 million for the first time.
You can count on SAC Federal Credit Union to remain financially stable during this period of economic troubles. Our recent expansion of the counties
which we serve will allow us to bring our services to more members. We are committed to making a positive difference in our members’ lives by providing
the products and services that help them through their life events.
NAFCU CEO OF THE YEAR
Gail L. DeBoer, President of SAC Federal Credit Union, was chosen as CEO of the Year
by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU). DeBoer was honored as
a NAFCU’s 2011 Annual Awards Competition winner in conjunction with NAFCU’s 44th
Annual Conference in San Francisco, June 28 – July 2.
2007
The Board of Directors announced
Gail DeBoer as President of SAC
Federal Credit Union. The Shadow
Lake Branch opened inside Hy-Vee
at Shadow Lake Towne Center in
Papillion. The South Omaha Branch
opened at 24th & L Street.
The Annual Awards Competition named the CEO of the Year in two credit union assetsize
categories. DeBoer was a winner among credit unions with $150 million or more in
assets. Annual Awards Competition winners were honored during the Awards Ceremony
and Luncheon June 30 at NAFCU’s 44th Annual Conference & Exhibition and profiled in
an issue of The Federal Credit Union magazine.
The national award recognizes the accomplishments of a credit union’s chief executive
officer – the individual’s achievements, dedication, and expertise. DeBoer has excelled in her role as CEO for SAC FCU since
taking her position in 2007. She has devoted energy to re-establishing SAC FCU as a viable contender with the biggest banks in
the Omaha metro area, and in 2010 SAC FCU attained that goal and became the largest local credit union in the state, growing
assets by more than 20 percent year over year.
This success has allowed SAC FCU to actively impact the Omaha community through various members and community outreach
programs. DeBoer’s energy has also gone into strengthening the community and developing others, which SAC FCU conveys
through their community culture and business model. SAC FCU had successfully launched four new branches in 2010, one being
in an economically depressed neighborhood in North Omaha on Ames Avenue, which has become a hallmark and symbol for
growth in this community.
2008
SAC FCU opened three new instore
locations: Council Bluffs Super
Saver, Millard Super Saver, and
Midtown Hy-Vee.
“I have had the pleasure of working with Gail for three years, so I’ve had the opportunity to watch her remarkable passion and
commitment and the business transformation that has resulted at SAC FCU through her leadership. Their business growth…
remarkable by any measure…is only rivaled by the culture of passion for members, associates and the greater community. SAC
FCU is a force, and Gail has modeled this through her leadership,” said Roger Fransecky, Ph.D, CEO and Founder of the global
management consulting and leadership development firm, The Apogee Group, Inc.
Through her hard work and dedication, DeBoer’s efforts contribute to the overall credit union community and its members, and
to the greater Omaha community.
DEFENSE CREDIT UNION
COUNCIL HALL OF HONOR
DCUC’s Hall of Honor was established twelve years ago as a means of recognizing individuals whose
contributions and inordinate support of the credit union movement added great value to the defense
Credit Union Council and defense credit union community. Since August 2000 only 39 individuals have
been selected for this coveted award. On August 23, 2011, at the Defense Credit Union Council’s 48th
Annual Conference, SAC FCU board member Jean Howard was inducted into DCUC’s Hall of Honor.
Jean was selected for her long-standing volunteer support of credit unions, the Defense Credit Union
Council, and the United States Air Force. As a military spouse, Howard dedicated her life to volunteerism,
lending her support to military quality of life programs such as Family and Children Services and on-base
hospitals. Her passion to serve prompted her to join SAC FCU in 1979, where she immediately became
engaged in and enhanced the credit union’s audit policies, supervisory committee, and its extraordinary
support of airmen and families at Offutt Air Force Base. Howard’s dedication to SAC FCU and her
unwavering commitment to the credit union philosophy and that of the Defense Credit Union Council, continues to serve as a role
model for her fellow board members to emulate.
