On Sunday, October 4, 2009, more than 2,200
grateful Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
graduates, parents, family, and friends
gathered at Verona Park for the 9th Annual
Miracle Walk. This annual celebration of life
raises funds for the 56-bed Saint Barnabas
Medical Center NICU.
As a Level III Regional Perinatal Center, the
highest designation attainable, the Saint
Barnabas NICU treats more than 1,200 infants
annually for prematurity, low birth weight,
illness, and congenital disorders.
Our NICU has one of the best infant survival
rates among neonatal intensive care units in
the nation. In fact, babies born at Saint

hospitals in the Vermont Oxford Network, a group
of more than 400 hospitals around the world.
Miracle Walk was created by a family in gratitude
for the care their daughter received during a
three-month stay in the Saint Barnabas NICU.
Together with a group of dedicated parents, they
continue to organize this much-anticipated event
which has raised more than $2.5 million since its
inception. Every gift to Miracle Walk helps the
Medical Center purchase advanced patient care
equipment – ensuring NICU babies
at Saint Barnabas receive
outstanding care and experience as
little discomfort as possible.

Celebration.
Diagnosed with juvenile diabetes early in life,
South Orange teen Erik Douds’ world changed
when his Saint Barnabas physicians
recommended he try an insulin pump.
Freeing him of some of the rigors of managing
diabetes, Erik realized just how fortunate he
was to benefit from this invaluable device.
That’s when Erik’s mission and passion
was born.
Realizing that some families are unable to
afford an insulin pump and costly diabetes
supplies, Erik was
determined to lend
a hand and make a
world of difference.
But how?
Soon, Erik became
a welcome sight at
the South Orange
train station selling
candy and bottled
water to commuters
and classmates at Seton Hall Prep. One
Snickers at a time, Erik raised an astounding
$5,000 to establish the Erik Douds Pediatric
Diabetes Fund at Saint Barnabas.

Erik’s mission to help medically disadvantaged
children with diabetes has become a reality.
His fund has already purchased patient
education materials which are given to every
newly-diagnosed diabetes patient. The Fund
also provides financial help to purchase
diabetes medication and supplies for children
and families in need.
We are humbled by Erik’s accomplishments,
passion, and commitment and know that even
greater things lie ahead for this remarkable
young man.

“We Are Saint Barnabas”

Broadcaster and television host Meredith Vieira spoke to a
standing-room-only gathering at Temple B’nai Jeshurun in Short
Hills. The nine-time Emmy Award-winning journalist, co-host of
NBC’s Today show, wife and mother of three, discussed
balancing work, family and the health concerns of husband
Richard during “An Evening with Meredith Vieira.”
This free presentation was sponsored by the Saint Barnabas
Medical Center Foundation and was the highlight of “We
Are Saint Barnabas,” a week-long celebration of caring for
the community.
A generous philanthropist and health care advocate, Ms. Vieira
is a spokesperson for Clown Care, the signature outreach
program of the Big Apple Circus. Clown Care brings professional
performers to hospitals to entertain and empower children, their
caregivers, and hospital staff. Saint Barnabas Medical Center is
the first and only hospital in New Jersey to offer this wonderful
program which is supported by the Gross Family Foundation of
South Orange and other donors to Saint Barnabas.
Ms. Vieira discussed her 30 year broadcasting career against the
backdrop of caring for her chronically ill husband. Ms. Vieira and
husband Richard Cohen, diagnosed with MS at 25 and after bouts
of colon cancer, are all too familiar with the importance of
compassionate, accessible health care close to home.
Nussbaum Society Members, donors who contribute more than
$5,000 annually to Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation,
enjoyed a private reception prior to Ms. Vieira’s talk. Ever generous
with her time, Ms. Vieira took photographs, chatted with donors,
and shared her views on modern health care and wellness.
Short Hills Family Creates Hope
Faith and Marc Greenstein are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children with pediatric epilepsy. Recently, the Greensteins
established a fund at Saint Barnabas to Help Overcome Pediatric Epilepsy. Gifts to The Greenstein H.O.P.E. Fund will enable nationally
recognized neurologists and pediatricians to come together and share innovative approaches to epilepsy care, research breakthroughs, and the
latest thinking on treatment options.
In April 2008, Faith and Marc's son, Ethan, was diagnosed with Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a primary symptom of which is epilepsy. Ethan has
had multiple stays in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Saint Barnabas due to seizures.
The Greenstein family, in partnership with Saint Barnabas Medical Center Foundation, is dedicated to raising support to better understand and
manage epilepsy and to enhance the lives of children and families living with this complex condition.
Gifts to The Greenstein H.O.P.E. Fund sponsored a standing-room-only presentation by Orrin Devinsky, MD, a Saint Barnabas neurologist featured
in the April 2009 Newsweek article “In the Grip of the Unknown,” about children living with epilepsy.
The Greenstein family is exploring ways to enrich the lives of children and families affected by epilepsy and how best to provide guidance and
support for newly diagnosed children. This spring, a family outing to the Turtle Back Zoo is planned for children with epilepsy and their families.

Lobby Dedication
Dedication of the Lore and Eric F. Ross Lobby was held in June at Saint Barnabas
Medical Center to honor the generosity of these remarkable benefactors and to pay
tribute to the memory of Mrs. Ross.
The Lobby was filled to capacity with friends, family, Saint Barnabas trustees and
administration, and employees - all of whom recognize and appreciate the enormous
imprint of the Ross’ generosity.

PEDDLE FOR PREVENTION
Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation will hold its 4th Annual Pedaling
for Prevention Ride in support of The Burn Center on Sunday, June
13, 2010. For more than 20 years, The Burn Foundation has
provided fire safety and burn prevention education programs for
children, businesses, community organizations, health care
professionals, and fire service personnel. Annually, the Saint
Barnabas Burn Foundation and The Burn Center touch the lives of
more than 34,000 individuals through patient care and prevention
and education programs.
This exciting, professionally-managed event includes a 40-, 25- or
10-mile ride through the scenic Great Swamp Refuge and
tree-lined communities in Morris and Somerset Counties. Every
rider receives an event t-shirt and gifts are awarded at various
pledge levels.

Following the unveiling of the Lori and Eric
F. Ross Lobby plaque, the celebration moved
to the hospital’s beautiful Patient Park. This
tranquil oasis is where Mr. Ross’ friends and
family gathered to celebrate his 90th
birthday. Three generations of the Ross
family enjoyed this wonderful event marking
an important milestone in Eric’s life.

Joseph and Dino Ottaiano, owners of Calabria’s
Restaurant in Livingston and John Gallucci,
President of JAG Physical Therapy hosted “A Night
for the Children” to benefit The John La Conti, MD
Child Life Fund at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
Since 1999, family, friends, and colleagues of John
La Conti, MD have been deeply committed to
honoring the memory of this talented and
much-loved pediatrician. Dr. La Conti’s memorial
fund supports music therapy, art therapy, and
developmental support for thousands of sick
children and their families. In addition, the
pediatric playroom and pre-operative tours are
supported by donations.
Gifts to Dr. La Conti's fund are critical to sustain
the Child Life Program which provides muchneeded
emotional support for hospitalized
children and those undergoing medical procedures
at Saint Barnabas. Most of all, this program brings
a little fun into the lives of children when they
need it most. Simply put, the Child Life Program
“lets kids be kids” despite the stress and fear
of hospitalization.

Clowning Around is Serious Business
On a sunny day in June, Denise and Carlton Myers and
their two daughters hosted their 6th Annual Charity BBQ
and Basketball Tournament in support of the Valerie
Center at Saint Barnabas.
Once again, the Myers opened their home to more than
150 family and friends for a spirited game of basketball
to raise funds for children with cancer and blood
disorders. The day was filled with fun and friendship and
over $5,000 was raised to benefit Clown Care, a program
that features professional performers using mime, magic,
music, and general hilarity to delight Valerie Center kids
and other pediatric patients throughout Saint Barnabas.
Clown Care has changed the lives of many children with
cancer including one young patient who agreed to
continue chemotherapy only if the clowns were at his
side during treatment.
As the only hospital in New Jersey with
Clown Care, the Foundation thanks the
Myers family for supporting this
important program.
We also recognize the Myers for prior
contributions which enabled the hospital
to purchase waiting room furniture,
patient care equipment, and to
commission a child-friendly mural which
has transformed a Valerie Center
treatment room.
The Myers commitment to kids with
cancer and blood disorders is a heartfelt
tradition of caring.

Three Foundation Grants –
One Important Outcome
An unstable economy and closure of inner city
hospitals are but two reasons more and more women
seek access to no-cost pre-natal and women’s health
care. To meet the needs of underserved women, Saint
Barnabas established an OB/GYN Continuity Clinic with
the goal of providing quality women’s care for all.
The generosity of three area foundations, The Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey, the
Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, and Frog Crossing Foundation, enabled Saint Barnabas to
enlarge and expand the OB/GYN Clinic and sustain the important work of the clinic’s social worker.
The Saint Barnabas OB/GYN Clinic was created to meet the needs of vulnerable women. Our Clinic
is a “safety net” offering medical care, nutrition counseling, psychosocial support, cervical cancer
screening, referrals for high-risk obstetrical care, and teen pregnancy programs and services.
Grants from The Healthcare Foundation, the Laurie Foundation, and Frog Crossing are invaluable.
The expanded Clinic allows staff to meet growing
demand for no-cost OB/GYN services and
with the Clinic furnished to resemble a private
doctor’s office women receive care in a modern,
dignified setting.
We could not be more grateful to each foundation for
supporting the needs of medically underserved women.
Their generosity ensures healthy women today and
healthy babies tomorrow.

Support Patient Care
Each year, the women of the Saint Barnabas Community Advocates award more than $60,000 to
hospital departments and nursing units to enhance patient care. Selecting among the worthy
applicants is difficult but the hard-working Ancillary Project Award Committee is up to the task year
after year. Awards were presented at the Community Advocates’ Annual Holiday Party and include:

oncologists, social workers, oncology nurses, and other

Oncology Nurse Navigator, patients and families
receive the highest levels of clinical care and support
throughout cancer treatment.
With a broad array of clinical trials and support
services such as holistic nursing, massage therapy,
music therapy, and spiritual care, patients experience
the Saint Barnabas commitment to treating the
whole patient.

Inaugural Golf Classic
The Friends of Saint Barnabas, active supporters representing greater Newark, held its inaugural Golf
Classic at Black Bear Golf Course in Franklin. Although the weather failed to cooperate, spirits were not
dampened, the event was a success, and more than $23,000 was raised to enhance care at the Saint
Barnabas Breast Center.

Hospital Supporters Golf for a Cause
Canoe Brook Country Club was the backdrop to this year’s Saint Barnabas Medical Center Golf
Outing which raised more than $450,000 for hospital programs and services. Sunny skies and a
cool breeze greeted golfers which included members of the medical staff and community
supporters.
A lively 50/50 auction raised vital funds for the Medical Center’s Child Life Program which provides
developmental support and art and music therapy for children hospitalized at Saint Barnabas.
Golfers dug deep to help sustain this important, much-loved program. We are grateful to the many

To thank our donors for their invaluable support, the
Foundation gives back by hosting receptions that feature
health care leaders. More than 40 donors attended a
recent reception at which Sari Kaplon, RN, Vice President,
Patient Care Services provided an overview of Saint
Barnabas and our commitment to the community.
The evening’s keynote speaker was M. Michele
Blackwood, M.D. Director of Breast Health and Disease
Management, who gave an informative talk about
advances in breast health.
Dr. Blackwood described recent breakthroughs in breast
cancer genetics as well as new treatment protocols in the
areas of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
Dr. Blackwood stressed the importance of breast cancer
prevention and advocates yearly mammography. After
describing the myriad breast health services available at
Saint Barnabas, Dr. Blackwood facilitated a lively
“question and answer” session and met one-on-one
with several donors.
Prior to joining Saint Barnabas, Dr. Blackwood was the
Director of Breast and Women’s Health Prevention
Services at Nyack Hospital. She then served as Medical
Director and Founder of the Connie Dwyer Breast Center
and Deputy Chair of Surgery at Saint Michael’s Medical
Center. Previously, she held the positions of Medical
Director of the Stamford Breast Center and Medical
Director of The Women’s Breast Center at the Tully
Health Center.
Dr. Blackwood received a Bachelor’s degree from
Georgetown University and graduated with a medical
degree from the Medical University of South Carolina.
She completed her internship and residency at The
Stamford Hospital, and a fellowship with the Breast
Service from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
The Foundation will reprise Dr. Blackwood’s talk at a
future donor reception and thanks her for sharing her
time and talent with the Medical Center’s supporters.
