Jonathan Haskett, Associate Director, Ph.D.<br />

Jonathan Haskett is a climate change scientist whose work focuses on the nexus<br />

of l<strong>and</strong> use climate change mitigation, adaptation <strong>and</strong> poverty reduction in the<br />

developing world. His work spans the creation of l<strong>and</strong> use carbon projects, the<br />

development of l<strong>and</strong>scape carbon measurement methodologies, <strong>and</strong> climate<br />

change policy at the domestic <strong>and</strong> international levels. He helped in the<br />

development of the long-term acquisition plan for the L<strong>and</strong>sat-7 satellite while<br />

at the University of Maryl<strong>and</strong>. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador (2002-<br />

2005), Dr. Haskett worked with indigenous communities on soil conservation,<br />

agroforestry <strong>and</strong> mapping of the l<strong>and</strong>scape carbon resource. During the period<br />

2007-2011 he worked with the World Wildlife Fund, the World Agroforestry<br />

Centre, <strong>and</strong> other development <strong>and</strong> conservation organizations.<br />

Dr. Haskett holds a Ph.D. <strong>and</strong> a Masters in soil science from the University of<br />

Minnesota <strong>and</strong> has done post-doctoral research on the effect of climate change<br />

on agriculture with USDA-ARS. He received his Bachelors from the University of<br />

Chicago.<br />

Deborah Bleviss, Associate Practitioner in Residence, B.A.<br />

Deborah Lynn Bleviss is a Professor in, <strong>and</strong> formerly Acting Director of, the<br />

Energy, Resources <strong>and</strong> Environment Program <strong>and</strong> has served as a Professorial<br />

Lecturer at SAIS since 1993. She has worked in the <strong>energy</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>environment</strong>al<br />

field for more than 30 years.<br />

From 2002 through June 2009, she worked as an independent consultant in<br />

<strong>energy</strong> efficiency, renewable <strong>energy</strong> <strong>and</strong> sustainable urban transportation. She<br />

was also a partner (2003-2007) in the BBG Group, a small consulting firm<br />

focusing on sustainable transportation. Previously, Ms. Bleviss worked first as<br />

an advisor to <strong>and</strong> then as <strong>program</strong> director of the Inter-American Development<br />

Bank’s Sustainable Markets for Sustainable Energy (SMSE) <strong>program</strong>. Prior to<br />

her work at the IDB, she worked at the U.S. Department of Energy as an advisor<br />

to the Assistant Secretary of Energy for Energy Efficiency <strong>and</strong> Renewable<br />

Energy, developing international <strong>and</strong> domestic clean transportation <strong>and</strong> <strong>energy</strong><br />

financing initiatives. She was also a founder <strong>and</strong> the first director of the<br />

International Institute for Energy Conservation.<br />

Her educational background includes graduate studies at Princeton University<br />

<strong>and</strong> she holds a B.S. in Physics from the University of California, Los Angeles.<br />
