Letter from new Director of<br />

Education, Mar<strong>in</strong>ta Skup<strong>in</strong><br />

As I start <strong>in</strong> my new position at <strong>the</strong> <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> Historical Society,<br />

I am struck by <strong>the</strong> tremendous opportunities that I see here. My vision<br />

is to establish <strong>the</strong> Education Department as an <strong>in</strong>dispensable resource<br />

for all students and teachers of <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> history. I believe that our<br />

department’s success will be a vital element of <strong>the</strong> SDHS’s ability to<br />

effectively fulfill its mission.<br />

The expansion and streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of K-12 programm<strong>in</strong>g at SDHS is<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore my first priority. We already offer excellent school programs<br />

on which we can build. One example is <strong>the</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Park</strong> program,<br />

a partnership program <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g ten Balboa <strong>Park</strong> museums and two<br />

<strong>in</strong>ner city schools <strong>in</strong> which we have been participat<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong> past n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

years. Through this program all third grade classes from Rosa <strong>Park</strong>s<br />

Elementary <strong>School</strong> and Hamilton Elementary <strong>School</strong> spend a week at a time <strong>in</strong> our museum <strong>in</strong> Balboa <strong>Park</strong>.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir time here, students learn about <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> history through a structured program that aligns handson,<br />

<strong>in</strong>teractive museum education with third-grade state curriculum standards. Two new education staff<br />

members, Hea<strong>the</strong>r Gach and Christian Lopez, have been hired to coord<strong>in</strong>ate and teach all aspects of this<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative program, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g collaborat<strong>in</strong>g extensively with <strong>the</strong> program managers and <strong>the</strong> third grade<br />

teachers <strong>in</strong>volved to make sure that we meet <strong>the</strong>ir needs and expectations. <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> Before Statehood is<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r exist<strong>in</strong>g, popular SDHS program offered at <strong>the</strong> Serra Museum (pictured on opposite page). Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> November, SDHS docents will conduct <strong>the</strong> program offer<strong>in</strong>g guided tours and related activities at <strong>the</strong> Serra<br />

and <strong>in</strong> Presidio <strong>Park</strong>.<br />
