Big Reds 9-10 &<br />

Junior Cornellians (JCs) 11-12<br />

Morning courses are taught by Cornell students with a h<strong>and</strong>s-on approach to<br />

learning. Students enroll in one course for the week. Healthy, kid-friendly meals<br />

<strong>and</strong> snacks, afternoon electives, swimming <strong>and</strong> bowling, field trips, <strong>and</strong> supervised<br />

evening activities will keep your Big Red or JC busy all day, while they make great<br />

new friends!<br />

weekly July 8 -august 4<br />

In CAU’s youth <strong>and</strong> teen programs, youngsters can get a wonderful taste <strong>of</strong> college life<br />

at Cornell while experiencing the fun <strong>and</strong> friendships <strong>of</strong> a terrific camp! Supervised by<br />

caring, trained counselors, your child will enjoy well-organized, stimulating activities<br />

<strong>and</strong> field trips, kid-friendly meals, <strong>and</strong> a chance to explore our beautiful campus.<br />

To encourage family participation, we <strong>of</strong>fer reduced fees for every second <strong>and</strong> fourth<br />

youngster accompanying a registered resident adult. See On-Campus Program Fees <strong>and</strong><br />

We can help you find a babysitter for<br />

infants <strong>and</strong> tots under three. You’ll<br />

meet, make arrangements with, <strong>and</strong><br />

pay sitters directly for daytime or<br />

evening care. If you’ll need a babysitter,<br />

please let us know in advance<br />

<strong>of</strong> your arrival.<br />

A day in the Li’l Bears, Tykes, <strong>and</strong><br />

Explorers programs includes easygoing<br />

educational activities, recreation,<br />

<strong>and</strong> visits to places <strong>of</strong> interest<br />

at Cornell <strong>and</strong> in Ithaca. Lunch <strong>and</strong><br />

healthy snacks are provided. At<br />

night, a childcare program continues<br />

until bedtime with games, entertainment,<br />

<strong>and</strong> crafts.<br />

Li’l Bears 3-4<br />

Stories ’Round the World<br />

Through literature <strong>and</strong> folklore, Li’l Bears<br />

will explore different countries <strong>and</strong> cultures<br />

each day, learning about people <strong>and</strong><br />

customs from l<strong>and</strong>s near <strong>and</strong> far. Games,<br />

music, crafts, <strong>and</strong> outdoor play, all under<br />

caring supervision, will round out each safe<br />

<strong>and</strong> happy day. (Note: Potty training is an<br />

absolute must.)<br />

Frog Squad: Amphibians<br />

Great <strong>and</strong> Small<br />

Visiting Cornell’s bogs <strong>and</strong> ponds at<br />

Sapsucker Woods <strong>and</strong> Beebe Lake,<br />

Tykes will investigate such mysteries<br />

as the great transformation from<br />

tadpole to frog or toad. H<strong>and</strong>s-on<br />

projects, discussion, stories, crafts,<br />

<strong>and</strong> outdoor play will fill each day<br />

with learning, fun, <strong>and</strong> lots <strong>of</strong> new<br />

friends.<br />

Explorers 7-8<br />

Buildings <strong>and</strong> Byways:<br />

Design <strong>and</strong> Models<br />

Explorers will learn basic principles <strong>of</strong><br />

architecture <strong>and</strong> create habitats, villages,<br />

buildings, <strong>and</strong> bridges that are functional,<br />

accessible, <strong>and</strong> environmentally friendly.<br />

Imaginative design <strong>and</strong> model-building<br />

each morning will be followed by afternoons<br />

<strong>of</strong> swimming, games, crafts, field<br />

trips, <strong>and</strong> nature studies.<br />

Morning Courses for Both Big Reds<br />

<strong>and</strong> Junior Cornellians, Together<br />

Horse Care <strong>and</strong> Riding<br />

Certified instructors at Cornell’s Oxley<br />

Equestrian Center will introduce Big<br />

Reds <strong>and</strong> JCs to horse care, grooming,<br />

use <strong>of</strong> equipment, <strong>and</strong> riding. For beginners<br />

<strong>and</strong> riders with some experience,<br />

this course will cover the basics <strong>of</strong><br />

horsemanship, such as control, learning<br />

to post to the trot, <strong>and</strong> cantering, as well<br />

as how to saddle, bridle, lead, <strong>and</strong> groom<br />

a horse. Additional fee: $150.<br />

Outdoor Adventures<br />

Led by instructors from Cornell<br />

Outdoor <strong>Education</strong>, Big Reds <strong>and</strong> JCs<br />

will sample group-challenge facilities<br />

including the Lindseth Climbing Wall<br />

<strong>and</strong> the H<strong>of</strong>fman Challenge Course. All<br />

five mornings will be filled with physical<br />

activities for kids who like to be on the<br />

move, including ground-level games,<br />

lessons on safety <strong>and</strong> technique, <strong>and</strong> rappelling.<br />

Additional fee: $140.<br />

Sailing<br />

Supervised <strong>and</strong> taught by instructors<br />

from Cornell’s Department <strong>of</strong> Athletics<br />

<strong>and</strong> Physical <strong>Education</strong>’s Aquatics<br />

Program, this introductory course will<br />

give young sailors h<strong>and</strong>s-on practice in<br />

setting sail <strong>and</strong> navigating. Indoor rainyday<br />

demonstrations <strong>and</strong> outdoor fun on<br />

the lake don’t require any previous sailing<br />

experience, but everyone must know<br />

how to swim. Additional fee: $130.<br />

Morning Courses for Big Reds Only<br />

Discovering Flight:<br />

Aeronautics <strong>and</strong> Soaring<br />

As they study the science <strong>of</strong> flying,<br />

Big Reds will learn how to design an<br />

airplane, the “perfect” bird, <strong>and</strong> other<br />

airborne objects. Concepts <strong>of</strong> air flow,<br />

propulsion, materials <strong>and</strong> form, stability,<br />

control, <strong>and</strong> adaptability will be demonstrated<br />

as Big Reds build (<strong>and</strong> let fly!)<br />

models <strong>of</strong> their own creation. Materials<br />

fee: $25.<br />

Puzzle-Mania<br />

Puzzles come in many shapes, sizes, <strong>and</strong><br />

forms, <strong>and</strong> each presents a mental or<br />

practical challenge. Working alone <strong>and</strong><br />

in teams, Big Reds will create their own<br />

mazes, models, <strong>and</strong> math, art, jigsaw, or<br />

word puzzles for others to solve <strong>and</strong> will<br />

try to figure out those <strong>of</strong> their competitors.<br />

Great for kids with inquiring minds!<br />

Morning Courses for<br />

Junior Cornellians Only<br />

Farm <strong>and</strong> Markets:<br />

Sustainable Agriculture<br />

How can we raise healthy food in a way<br />

that does not harm the environment,<br />

is humane for workers, <strong>and</strong> provides a<br />

fair wage to farmers? Through visits to<br />

local farms <strong>and</strong> farmers’ markets, JCs<br />

will discover firsth<strong>and</strong> how sustainable<br />

agriculture can help us meet our needs<br />

without jeopardizing the ability <strong>of</strong> future<br />

generations to do the same.<br />

Cartoons <strong>and</strong> Drawing<br />

Doodlers <strong>and</strong> fledgling artists alike will<br />

be encouraged to develop their own<br />

signature style as they create characters<br />

<strong>and</strong> posters, experiment with different<br />

techniques, <strong>and</strong> learn from a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

cartoonist. Pop culture, comics,<br />

<strong>and</strong> great masterpieces in artists’ studios<br />

<strong>and</strong> museums will provide inspiration as<br />

JCs create their own CAU portfolio.<br />

Writers’ Circle: Flash Fiction<br />

Open to JCs who are at least twelve<br />

years old, space permitting. See course<br />
