Exhibit Depicts Lincoln’s<br />
Journey to Emancipation<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> was among the select<br />
group <strong>of</strong> schools chosen to display “Forever<br />
Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to<br />
Emancipation,” a national traveling exhibition<br />
that focuses on Lincoln’s quest to<br />
restore a Union divided by Civil War.<br />
<strong>The</strong> exhibit <strong>of</strong> reproductions <strong>of</strong> rare<br />
historical documents and photographs<br />
shows how Lincoln’s beliefs about freeing<br />
the slaves were transformed by wartime<br />
developments. “Forever Free” was on display<br />
at the Weinberg Memorial Library<br />
from Feb. 9 through Mar. 22.<br />
As part <strong>of</strong> the exhibit Len Gougeon,<br />
Ph.D., distinguished university fellow and<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> American literature, presented<br />
“In the Heat <strong>of</strong> War: Lincoln, Emerson,<br />
and ‘<strong>The</strong> Fortune <strong>of</strong> the Republic’.” Karen<br />
Immigration Mosaic Unveiled<br />
An Immigration Mosaic created from<br />
approximately 180 photos <strong>of</strong> immigrants<br />
from 39 countries submitted by students,<br />
faculty and staff was unveiled in November<br />
and is on display in the DeNaples<br />
Center. <strong>The</strong> project, completed as part <strong>of</strong><br />
the 2008-<strong>2009</strong> justice theme <strong>of</strong> immigration,<br />
is intended to serve as a reminder<br />
that America is a nation made up <strong>of</strong><br />
immigrants. <strong>The</strong> project was coordinated<br />
by the Education for Justice Office.<br />
An Immigration Mosaic <strong>of</strong><br />
immigrants from 39 countries is<br />
on display in the DeNaples Center.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Scranton</strong> Heritage Room <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Weinberg Memorial Library provides a<br />
resplendent backdrop for “Forever Free,”<br />
a national traveling exhibition focusing<br />
on Lincoln’s quest to restore a Union<br />
divided by Civil War.<br />
James <strong>of</strong> the Pennsylvania Historical and<br />
Museum Commission delivered a presentation<br />
on the Abolitionist Movement in<br />
Pennsylvania, and Thomas E. Wooden<br />
Sr., Center for Anti-slavery Studies, talked<br />
about the Underground Railroad in<br />
Northeastern Pennsylvania.<br />
“Forever Free” was made possible by<br />
grants from the National Endowment for<br />
the Humanities (NEH) and the Abraham<br />
Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, created<br />
by Congress and charged with planning<br />
the national celebration <strong>of</strong> Lincoln’s 200th<br />
birthday.<br />
<strong>Scranton</strong> President<br />
Honored with Awards<br />
<strong>University</strong> President Rev. Scott R.<br />
Pilarz, S.J., has been honored with three<br />
awards.<br />
On April 18, Georgetown <strong>University</strong><br />
honored Fr. Pilarz with <strong>The</strong> John Carroll<br />
Award, the highest honor bestowed by the<br />
Alumni Association <strong>of</strong> Georgetown.<br />
Established by the Georgetown <strong>University</strong><br />
Alumni Association in 1951, <strong>The</strong><br />
John Carroll Award honors alumni whose<br />
achievements exemplify the ideals and<br />
traditions <strong>of</strong> Georgetown <strong>University</strong> and<br />
its founder, Archbishop John Carroll. All<br />
recipients have distinguished themselves<br />
through lifetime achievement and outstanding<br />
service to their alma mater. Five<br />
John Carroll Awards are presented each<br />
year. <strong>The</strong> <strong>2009</strong> Awards were presented<br />
during John Carroll Weekend, an annual<br />
gathering <strong>of</strong> Georgetown alumni.<br />
Fr. Pilarz earned a bachelor’s degree<br />
in English from Georgetown <strong>University</strong><br />
and served on the faculty before being<br />
named interim <strong>University</strong> Chaplain.<br />
Fr. Pilarz has received two other awards<br />
from Georgetown. He was recognized by<br />
the Georgetown Alumni Association in<br />
2002 with the William Gaston Award for<br />
Outstanding Service and, while serving<br />
as a pr<strong>of</strong>essor there, was chosen by the<br />
graduating class <strong>of</strong> 1999 to receive the<br />
Edward B. Bunn, S.J., Award for Faculty<br />
Excellence, which recognizes outstanding<br />
teaching and service.<br />
