THE SEATTLE UNIVERSITY CHOIRS MISSION STATEMENT The primary purpose of the Seattle University Choirs is to foster the growth of the person and to enhance the enjoyment of music through its study and performance. We aim to bring more love into the world, support each other in our growth as human beings and musicians, and enrich our own lives and those of our audiences through the outstanding performance of great music. SEATTLE UNIVERSITY, founded in 1891, is the largest independent university in the Pacific Northwest and one of the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Nearly 8,000 students are enrolled in 61 undergraduate, 33 graduate, and 21 certificate programs, including doctoral programs in education and law. Now celebrating one hundred and twenty years of service (2011), Seattle University is dedicated to its mission of commitment to teaching and learning, education for values, preparation for service, and growth of persons.
SEATTLE UNIVERSITY CHOIRS The Seattle University Choirs, under the direction of Dr. Joy Sherman, have grown not only in number, but also in stature in the greater Seattle area. The choirs, composed of students, staff, faculty, and alumni of Seattle University, are Men’s Chorale, Women’s Chorale, University Chorale, and Chamber Singers. The unique character of the Seattle University Choirs is derived from the diversity and dedication of its members. While some of the student members pursue a fine arts major or a music minor, the majority of singers represents all colleges and departments of the university. The Seattle University Choirs perform their Christmas and Spring Concerts at St. Joseph Church on Capitol Hill in Seattle, plus a Family Weekend Concert and a Lenten Prayer concert in the Chapel of St. Ignatius on the Seattle University campus. Audience members have offered such rave reviews as, “…an incomparable evening of music and enjoyment!”; “Thank you for a magical, moving, and uplifting night of music”; and “The conducting was superb, the singing was awesome.” As representatives of the University, the Choirs have also performed at significant University-affiliated events off-campus, among them the OPUS humanitarian awards at Benaroya Hall (2008) and the “Women in the World” breakfast sponsored by the Seattle International Foundation (2010). The Seattle University Choirs are proud to live the Jesuit mission by providing developmental opportunities, service to the community, and praise of God through song. DIRECTOR: Dr. Joy Sherman joined the Faculty at Seattle University in 1991 as Director of Choral Activities. Dr. Sherman has taught choral music at all levels in public schools and at four universities. She earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she received the Teaching Excellence Award and was granted membership in the national music honor society, Pi Kappa Lambda. Dr. Sherman has served as an adjudicator and clinician for honor choirs and choral festival throughout the United States conducting the California Women’s All-State Choir in 1995 and the Saratoga Springs, New York area All-State Choir in 1997. Dr. Sherman presented a lecture at the 1995 national convention of the American Choral Directors Association. She has also published music with Santa Barbara Music Publishing and articles in the Choral Journal, the national journal of the American Choral Directors Association. ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: Lee Peterson has a DMA in piano performance from Michigan State University and was Assistant Professor of Piano at Baylor University for six years before coming to Seattle in 1994. An ordained minister, Dr. Peterson earned the MATS (Master of Arts in Transforming Spirituality) at Seattle University in 2003. Currently Assistant Director of Choral Music at SU, Lee has been with the SU choirs since 1999, serving as accompanist, assistant conductor, rehearsal assistant, composer, and arranger/transcriber. She has also collaborated with other faculty as an accompanist and performed solo piano recitals on and off-campus. Lee Peterson’s Missa Anime, commissioned by the Choirs, was premiered in its entirety at the SU Choirs Festival of Christmas concerts in 2006.
