This workshop will address the educ<strong>at</strong>ional needs <strong>of</strong> students who are the subject <strong>of</strong><br />
court proceedings, including neglect, educ<strong>at</strong>ion neglect and abuse, persons in need<br />
<strong>of</strong> supervision and juvenile delinquency m<strong>at</strong>ters. We will explore the interplay between<br />
the child welfare, juvenile justice and educ<strong>at</strong>ion systems, and discuss a number <strong>of</strong><br />
legal issues relevant to school social workers.<br />
B. Power <strong>of</strong> Fitness for You and Students<br />

In this workshop participants will be presented with the benefits <strong>of</strong> fitness from a holistic<br />
approach. Participants will learn wh<strong>at</strong> makes someone functionally fit and how this<br />
affects them mentally, implementing basic fitness into their own lives and their students’<br />
lives both <strong>at</strong> school and <strong>at</strong> home.<br />

Mark J. F. Schroeder<br />
As the chairman <strong>of</strong> the Assembly Subcommittee on Autism, Schroeder has cre<strong>at</strong>ed an<br />
inclusive panel <strong>of</strong> mental health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, autism advoc<strong>at</strong>es, and concerned<br />
parents, with the mission <strong>of</strong> providing for better care for those afflicted with the disorder.<br />
Assemblyman Schroeder has been a tireless advoc<strong>at</strong>e for children and educ<strong>at</strong>ion and<br />
has pushed forward safe guarding children from sexual pred<strong>at</strong>ors as well as many<br />
other causes to benefit our children and families.<br />

Nancy J. Smyth, PhD, LCSW is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Dean <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>at</strong> Buffalo <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Social</strong> <strong>Work</strong>. Dr. Smyth has been on the <strong>UB</strong> faculty since 1991 and has served as dean<br />
since 2004. She is a Board Certified Expert in Traum<strong>at</strong>ic Stress and has worked in both<br />
mental health and addiction tre<strong>at</strong>ment settings for over 35 years as a clinician,<br />
manager, educ<strong>at</strong>or, researcher, and program developer.<br />

The workshop will set the stage clinically for the whys and how-to’s on conducting <strong>Social</strong><br />
Skills groups with typical children as well as children on the spectrum. A focus will be on<br />
teaching anger reduction which can be applied as a clinical technique as well as<br />
providing a model to help teachers respond more appropri<strong>at</strong>ely with angry students.<br />
B. Trauma - Informed Care<br />

Research indic<strong>at</strong>es th<strong>at</strong> exposure to trauma occurs <strong>at</strong> high r<strong>at</strong>es within our culture, and is one<br />
<strong>of</strong> the major causes <strong>of</strong> chronic health and mental health problems. With this understanding,<br />
there has been a growing awareness <strong>of</strong> the reality th<strong>at</strong> many <strong>of</strong> our service settings oper<strong>at</strong>e<br />
in ways th<strong>at</strong> may not be as supportive as they could be <strong>of</strong> people who have experienced<br />
trauma. This workshop will present the principles for cre<strong>at</strong>ing environments th<strong>at</strong> are optimal for<br />
learning, healing and growth for those people who have lived through traum<strong>at</strong>ic experiences.<br />
C. Face 2 Face: An In-Depth Look <strong>at</strong> how the<br />
Changing Drug Culture is Affecting our Kids,<br />
Communities and <strong>School</strong>s<br />

Generally it is very dicult to access children’s mental health services. This is even more<br />
true for accessing child psychi<strong>at</strong>rists who are a serious shortage specialty currently and<br />
for the foreseeable future. The CAP PC project is an innov<strong>at</strong>ive program to provide<br />
educ<strong>at</strong>ion and consult<strong>at</strong>ion support to primary care physicians throughout New York.<br />
B. The Impact <strong>of</strong> Witnessing Domestic<br />
Violence on Children<br />
Tara S. Hughes, LCSW-R<br />
This training will look <strong>at</strong> the effects th<strong>at</strong> witnessing Domestic Violence has on children.<br />
Although children can be highly resilient in their coping, research has found th<strong>at</strong> witnessing<br />
Domestic Violence in one’s family can put a large strain on a child’s coping skills and leave<br />
him/her potentially traum<strong>at</strong>ized. Children who must dually identify their protector (i.e.<br />
parent) as their biggest thre<strong>at</strong> end up with a much higher r<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> trauma and PTSA. This<br />
training will look <strong>at</strong> how potentially traum<strong>at</strong>izing events/p<strong>at</strong>terns are processed by children<br />
and how intervention can happen th<strong>at</strong> is research based and effective.<br />
C. Mindfulness Based Art Therapy, or MBAT,<br />
and its Applic<strong>at</strong>ion to Trauma Informed Tre<strong>at</strong>ment<br />
Elizabeth Davis, M.F.A., M.S., ART- BC, LCAT<br />
MBAT (Mindful Based Art Therapy), is a blend <strong>of</strong> two disciplines, MBSR, (Mindfulness Based<br />
Stress Reduction), and Art Therapy. This workshop will present some <strong>of</strong> the l<strong>at</strong>est evidence<br />
on the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> using mindfulness in the tre<strong>at</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> trauma and trauma rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
illness, how MBSR is applied and integr<strong>at</strong>ed into Art Therapy, and will include a hands on<br />
MBAT experiential. Participants may come ready to first take in some exciting research<br />
and then focus on personal relax<strong>at</strong>ion and cre<strong>at</strong>ive expression.<br />

A. Introduction to Compassion<strong>at</strong>e Communic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Dawn Lewandowski, Compassion<strong>at</strong>e Communic<strong>at</strong>ion Facilit<strong>at</strong>or<br />
This workshop will introduce the basics <strong>of</strong> Compassion<strong>at</strong>e Communic<strong>at</strong>ion (CC) and<br />
demonstr<strong>at</strong>e its applic<strong>at</strong>ion. It is based on the work <strong>of</strong> Marshall Rosenberg as described in<br />
his book, Nonviolent Communic<strong>at</strong>ion: A Language <strong>of</strong> Life. CC is a tool to increase<br />
understanding and connection in any rel<strong>at</strong>ionship which can lead to the identific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
life- enriching choices.<br />
B. The Damage <strong>of</strong> Drama: Keeping Peer<br />
Conflict and ‘Drama’ from Becoming Bullying<br />
K<strong>at</strong>y Allen, M.Ed.<br />
Students live in a complex social environment rife with peer conflict and ‘drama,’ which<br />
may or may not be bullying. This session reviews new research on ‘drama,’ a type <strong>of</strong><br />
social interaction characterized by overreaction, excessive emotionality, prolong<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />
involvement <strong>of</strong> extraneous individuals, and infl<strong>at</strong>ed relevance. Participants will develop an<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> the distinct, yet overlapping constructs <strong>of</strong> peer conflict, ‘drama,’ and<br />
bullying, along with a review <strong>of</strong> a research-based, systemic approach for addressing<br />
conflict and ‘drama’ in school before they become bullies.<br />
