A. Education Matters for Court Involved Youth

at the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo
This workshop will address the educational needs of students who are the subject of
court proceedings, including neglect, education neglect and abuse, persons in need
of supervision and juvenile delinquency matters. We will explore the interplay between
the child welfare, juvenile justice and education systems, and discuss a number of
legal issues relevant to school social workers.
B. Power of Fitness for You and Students
Justin Prusak, certified personal training
instructor at Erie 1 Boces
In this workshop participants will be presented with the benefits of fitness from a holistic
approach. Participants will learn what makes someone functionally fit and how this
affects them mentally, implementing basic fitness into their own lives and their students’
lives both at school and at home.

Mark J. F. Schroeder
As the chairman of the Assembly Subcommittee on Autism, Schroeder has created an
inclusive panel of mental health professionals, autism advocates, and concerned
parents, with the mission of providing for better care for those afflicted with the disorder.
Assemblyman Schroeder has been a tireless advocate for children and education and
has pushed forward safe guarding children from sexual predators as well as many
other causes to benefit our children and families.

Social Work in a Digital Age
Nancy J. Smyth, PhD, LCSW
Nancy J. Smyth, PhD, LCSW is Professor and Dean at the University at Buffalo School of
Social Work. Dr. Smyth has been on the UB faculty since 1991 and has served as dean
since 2004. She is a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress and has worked in both
mental health and addiction treatment settings for over 35 years as a clinician,
manager, educator, researcher, and program developer.

A. Using Social Skills Intervention in Groups
and as a Consultation Model with Teachers

The workshop will set the stage clinically for the whys and how-to’s on conducting Social
Skills groups with typical children as well as children on the spectrum. A focus will be on
teaching anger reduction which can be applied as a clinical technique as well as
providing a model to help teachers respond more appropriately with angry students.
B. Trauma - Informed Care
Nancy J. Smyth, PhD, LCSW
Research indicates that exposure to trauma occurs at high rates within our culture, and is one
of the major causes of chronic health and mental health problems. With this understanding,
there has been a growing awareness of the reality that many of our service settings operate
in ways that may not be as supportive as they could be of people who have experienced
trauma. This workshop will present the principles for creating environments that are optimal for
learning, healing and growth for those people who have lived through traumatic experiences.
C. Face 2 Face: An In-Depth Look at how the
Changing Drug Culture is Affecting our Kids,
Communities and Schools
Stacy Roeder, Face 2 Face Director; Dale Kasprzyk, DEA; a
representative from the UB School of Pharmacy; Jessica Sherman,
LMSW, Face 2 Face Program; Aimee Smart, LMSW, school social worker;
and a graduate of the Renaissance Campus will share valuable
information and experiences in a dynamic panel presentation.

A. CAP PC (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
for Primary Care): New York State's response
to the Child Psychiatry Shortage
David L. Kaye MD; Professor of Psychiatry

PC (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for Primary Care)
Generally it is very dicult to access children’s mental health services. This is even more
true for accessing child psychiatrists who are a serious shortage specialty currently and
for the foreseeable future. The CAP PC project is an innovative program to provide
education and consultation support to primary care physicians throughout New York.
B. The Impact of Witnessing Domestic
Violence on Children
Tara S. Hughes, LCSW-R
This training will look at the effects that witnessing Domestic Violence has on children.
Although children can be highly resilient in their coping, research has found that witnessing
Domestic Violence in one’s family can put a large strain on a child’s coping skills and leave
him/her potentially traumatized. Children who must dually identify their protector (i.e.
parent) as their biggest threat end up with a much higher rate of trauma and PTSA. This
training will look at how potentially traumatizing events/patterns are processed by children
and how intervention can happen that is research based and effective.
C. Mindfulness Based Art Therapy, or MBAT,
and its Application to Trauma Informed Treatment
Elizabeth Davis, M.F.A., M.S., ART- BC, LCAT
MBAT (Mindful Based Art Therapy), is a blend of two disciplines, MBSR, (Mindfulness Based
Stress Reduction), and Art Therapy. This workshop will present some of the latest evidence
on the effectiveness of using mindfulness in the treatment of trauma and trauma related
illness, how MBSR is applied and integrated into Art Therapy, and will include a hands on
MBAT experiential. Participants may come ready to first take in some exciting research
and then focus on personal relaxation and creative expression.

A. Introduction to Compassionate Communication
Dawn Lewandowski, Compassionate Communication Facilitator
This workshop will introduce the basics of Compassionate Communication (CC) and
demonstrate its application. It is based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg as described in
his book, Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life. CC is a tool to increase
understanding and connection in any relationship which can lead to the identification of
life- enriching choices.
B. The Damage of Drama: Keeping Peer
Conflict and ‘Drama’ from Becoming Bullying
Katy Allen, M.Ed.
Students live in a complex social environment rife with peer conflict and ‘drama,’ which
may or may not be bullying. This session reviews new research on ‘drama,’ a type of
social interaction characterized by overreaction, excessive emotionality, prolongation,
involvement of extraneous individuals, and inflated relevance. Participants will develop an
understanding of the distinct, yet overlapping constructs of peer conflict, ‘drama,’ and
bullying, along with a review of a research-based, systemic approach for addressing
conflict and ‘drama’ in school before they become bullies.
