<strong>The</strong> Office <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Secretary</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong> was established by the <strong>Washington</strong><br />
<strong>State</strong> Constitution in 1889. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Secretary</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong> is elected every four years<br />
and is second in line <strong>of</strong> succession to the Governor. Thirteen men and one<br />
woman have served as <strong>Secretary</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong> since <strong>Washington</strong> became the 42nd<br />
state in the Union, known as the United <strong>State</strong>s.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Secretary</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong> is <strong>Washington</strong>’s Chief Elections Officer, Chief<br />
Corporations Officer and supervisor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>State</strong> Archives and the <strong>State</strong><br />
Library. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Secretary</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>State</strong> also manages many special programs,<br />
including providing information to help donors make informed choices about<br />
the charities they give money to.<br />
