About the Institute The Graduate School of Art AND Its Markets Since 1969, Sotheby’s Institute of Art has pioneered the education of arts professionals whose careers have placed them at the centre of the international art world. With campuses in London, New York and Online, Sotheby’s Institute offers graduate-level programmes and academic courses that uniquely integrate art historical scholarship, object-based learning, professional engagement and market expertise. The cornerstone of the Institute’s curriculum is its dedication to object-based study, which is the belief that a true understanding of art in its historical, contemporary and market contexts begins with the work of art itself. This is enhanced by bringing students into direct contact with works of art and the institutions that house them through field study trips to museums, galleries, auction houses, and private collections around the globe. Sotheby’s Institute offers many paths of study such as programmes leading to PhD and MA degrees, as well as Online courses that are available to people anywhere in the world and offer a convenient introduction to a variety of art subjects. Degrees from the Institute’s London campus are awarded by the University of Manchester. In New York, degrees are granted pursuant to the authority of the Regents of the State of New York. The New York Institute is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) is an independent agency which is responsible for upholding quality and standards in UK universities and colleges, including such premier academic institutions as the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. In 2012 Sotheby’s Institute of Art— London underwent a successful review by the Quality Assurance Agency which has resulted in confirmation of the Institute as a Highly Trusted Sponsor. 7
