editor’s comment The Answer is 42 Well, as anticipated, I have been totally unindated by applications for my job, so it looks like you will be subjected to my sharp wit and intense sense of humour for another 21 years! But don’t worry, I’ve solved the problem of what to write about in my columns: I will just go back to issue No.1 and start recycling the original columns from there on. Those of you that were around then will be too old and doddery to remember back that far anyway, and the rest of you probably hadn’t even learnt to read by then, so we are in good shape. So, what was the first column about? To be honest, I can’t actually remember! What I do remember is that ‘cutting and pasting’ those early issues actually did involve just that – with scissors and glue! And laying the magazine out required a qualification in origami to ensure that all the pages turned out the right way around after they were printed front and back, folded and then cut up and reassembled. The editorial content was supplied in ‘galleys’ – long scrolls of chemical induced, shiny, photographic-like paper, very hard to mark up any corrections on. Those were the days! Nowadays, with Adobe InDesign the text flows through the columns in the allotted space and you can automatically adjust the kerning and leading as you go – not that I’d actually know if my kern needed adjusting. Katharina, Resolutions’ very talented graphic designer sees to all that, and makes it look so simple. On to things that aren’t so simple: reading some of the articles in this edition you’ll quickly find that there are many influences on our industry – and not all of them are there to make our lives any easier. AAPG President, Ted Beaumont, who gave a keynote address at the AAPG ICE in Singapore recently (see page 14), on the success of unconventionals in the USA, described how they were instrumental in removing the country’s reliance on imported oil and gas, and aiding its manufacturing sector to return to a semblance of its former glory. The first of our two technology contributions in this edition (Page 18) looks at how reservoir simulation can help to bring Australia’s coal bed methane into production. Our thanks to Taha Taha from Roxar Software Solutions for providing this. Our other technology article on Page 44, provided by Martin Bett of TGS, looks at the value of permanent reservoir monitoring, using seabed seismic technology to help improve oil recovery. RPS Energy’s MD, John Stanton provides us his View From The Top – from his early days, when although he had a lot of fun, he wasn ’t sure of which direction to take, through to representing his company throughout Asia. He admits that, like many of us, our partners support and ‘guide’ us through the stressful times – and allow us the occasional relaxing game of golf. One of our team attended the recent Geothermal Conference in Sydney and provides a frank report on an optimistic but realistic industry sector. See Page 54. The first report in our Industry News section covers industry concerns on what they describe as federal regulator, NOPSEMA’s heavy-handed regulations on companies trying to full-fill their exploration licence work programs in the allotted times. See Page 24 for this report. The Federal Government’s much awaited Energy White Paper has been met with mixed emotions, depending on what side of the energy fence you sit on. The Feds talk up energy reform and energy security, but don’t side with the domestic gas users for a federal gas reservation policy. They also sound a caution on rising costs and its affect on households and businesses, but pull up short of providing their view of the way forward. Industry groups, APIA and WA Domgas are much more forward in offering their opinions on solutions. Turn to Page 30 to read the various opinions. Aussies are still active overseas, with reports on Antares in Texas, MEO in Thailand and Woodside spreading its wings to Israel. In the magazine’s 21 st year, stalwart Peter Purcell continues to provide us with entertainment while lightly rapping us over the knuckles for errors in grammar – or duhvincis as he calls them.
