Applications
Healthcare
Barcodes are traditionally used in medical environments to prevent medication and surgical
errors during the patient-care process. Barcode technology can aid in dispensing and
administrating medication and blood products, collecting and tracking specimen tests and
x-rays as well as managing and locating medical files and equipments. On every incoming
patient’s wrist, there is a barcode that holds identity information, reasons for admittance,
allergies and medication prescribed. The barcode is scanned to verify the patient’s identity
before medication is administered or before the patient undergoes a medical procedure.
In the medical field, the RFID technology helps to eliminate medical mistakes. For example,
when a tissue or fluid sample is collected from a patient at a hospital, an RFID tag can be
automatically tracked through various preparation stages, therefore reducing data entry errors
or mishandling. A pathologist can then retrieve patient records directly from the tag to the
computer screen to ensure accurate patient and sample identification.
Logistics
It is in logistics warehousing that RFID technology offers the greatest potential for
scalability and application development. International logistics giants such as FedEx,
DHL and UPS are all actively involved in the experimentation and implementation
of RFID technology to streamline operations and optimize performance. Storage
management systems, automatic data acquisition, and real-time asset tracking are
among the many RFID applications that benefit businesses today.
Retail
Wal-Mart, Zara and other leading retailers were among the first to apply RFID technology to inventory management. Reduced labor cost is one immediate value
brought by RFID implementation, as merchandize is recorded and tracked automatically, eliminating the need for human handling. Out-of-stock is decreased and
overstock is prevented through improved visibility from RFID-enabled distribution systems. Not only can retailers keep more items on stock, they can also greatly
improve shelf availability, leading to more sales and improved revenue.
Access Control
Compared with traditional access control systems, like barcode
and magnetic stripe readers, RFID technology provides
complete hands-free access to secured areas. People carrying
packages, and those with disabilities, no longer have to struggle
in front of the reader, trying to make closer contact. Handsfree
access provides quick entry during inclement weather and
makes attendance management more convenient. Electronic
vehicle registration at car parks further ensures that only
authorized personnel are admitted. Any unauthorized access
can be recorded in real-time, triggering security to respond to
an alert.
