‘There is hope’ for devastated communities
BY KEVIN FLANDERS
VILLAGER STAFF WRITER
Gov. Deval Patrick, Sen. Stephen Brewer (D-
Barre), and State Rep. Todd Smola (R-Palmer),
as well as several other local officials, spent
last Wednesday night, Thursday, and Friday
touring the destruction in several communities
following the devastating tornado strikes.
On Wednesday night, June 1, Smola helped
set up an emergency shelter in Palmer before
heading east to Brimfield, where about 60 people
spent the night in a shelter. He met with
Brewer and Patrick the next morning to visit
Monson residents and business owners whose
properties in the center of town were completely
destroyed. A trip to Brimfield hours
later revealed similar damage on Hollow
Road, Haynes Hill Road, Five Bridge Road,
and other nearby streets. Farther to the east
along Route 20, nearly 100 units were damaged
at the Village Green Family Campground (228
Sturbridge Road), where Virginia Darlow was
killed after her RV overturned.
“It was an absolute miracle that there
weren’t more fatalities as a result of these tornadoes,”
Smola said. “The pictures and videos
don’t do it justice — the destruction in these
towns is unbelievable.”
Smola surveyed the damage to homes and
businesses along Route 131 in Sturbridge with
Police Chief Thomas Ford III and Town
Administrator Shaun Suhoski. Extensive
damage was done to properties in the area of
Hall Road, Willard Road, and Farquhar Road,
which prompted the closure of Route 131 on
Thursday.
Smola and Brewer commended Patrick and
the Massachusetts Emergency Management
Agency for initiating a rapid response, as well
as the emergency personnel and utility crews
who traveled from eastern sections of
Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York to
RELAY FOR LIFE 2011 FUND RAISERS
provide assistance.
“This area has taken a devastating blow,”
said Brewer. “The process of clean-up and
recovery will be a long one, but we will recover.
I applaud the first responders and the emergency
service personnel from both
Massachusetts and Connecticut. The care and
service they are providing in these towns is
critical, and the job they are doing is exceptional.”
Politicians heard one tragic story after
another during their tours through the path of
destruction, as many home and business owners
found their properties leveled down to the
foundations. Countless other structures
weren’t total losses, but they will require thousands
of dollars in repair work.
“I spoke with the owner of Sturbridge Auto
Body, who had just finished fixing three vehicles
before the tornado came and destroyed
them,” added Smola. “The stories are heartbreaking,
but the resiliency these people have
shown in the last few days has been tremendous.
I have not seen one pair of idle hands yet
– everyone has been working extremely hard
to help their friends and neighbors.”
Brewer agreed, describing the hard work
and sense of community that were apparent
since last Wednesday evening as integral to
the recovery effort.
“The loss these communities have suffered
is enormous, but there is hope,” Brewer said.
The personal stories I have heard today and
the strength and endurance of those affected
has been inspiring. We will continue to work
together and to rise up stronger.”
battled this disease. I’ve set a personal goal to
raise at least $1000. Any donation you can
make, large or small, will help me reach my
fundraising goal and helps us reach the
greater goal of saving lives from cancer!
QUARTERS FOR CANCER RESEARCH
SOUTHBRIDGE — The American Cancer
Society Relay For Life of the Greater
Southbridge Area is collecting quarters in
hopes of having enough donations to encircle
the walking track beginning on Friday, June
17 through closing ceremonies on June 18 at
McMahon Field. The track is 1/4 mile or 440
yards. Since there are 13 quarters ($3.25) in a
foot and 38 quarters ($9.50) to a yard,
Relay/Southbridge hopes to line the track
with 16, 270 quarters. That would raise over
$4000 for cancer research. Canisters will be
available at Stearns Meats on Route 169 in
Charlton, Ted’s Package Store on Route 20 in
Charlton and Green Thumb
Florist/Sturbridge Candle Company in
Brimfield. Or you may donate by calling Ray
at (508) 347-7419, Rick at (774) 200-9596 or Ron at
(508) 347-3826. Please help us to reach out goal
by depositing your quarters as we all inch
toward the real goal, defeating cancer.
PERSONALIZED SCULPTURE
The Southbridge Relay For Life Dream
Team wants to know if you would like to give
someone a blessing. If you know of someone
who is sick or living on hard times right now
and could use a blessing, give them a very personalized
gift that will lift their spirits and let
them know that they are being thought of and
prayed for. For $10 I will create for them a
sculpture that I make from scratch, specifically
for them. I will notify you with a delivery
date and someone will deliver it to you for you
to pass along to your loved one. Please contact
PURPLE HAIR FOR PURPLE POWER
Purple is the color of the Relay For Life. But
while tens of thousands nationwide show
their support for Relay, not everyone would be
willing to dye their hair purple to demonstrate
their dedication to the cause. Fewer still
would think of doing it to raise funds for ACS.
But Faye Fulone Sweeney, long-time captain of
the Big Dog Bandits Relay team, has applied
her creative fund-raising radar to the effort.
For each donation, in any amount, Faye will
dye a section of her now-blonde hair purple! If
she reaches her goal of $1000 between now
and June 14, she will arrive at the Relay on
June 17 with a full head of bright purple hair.
Now that would be a sight worth a donation! It
will certainly be a sight that demonstrates
that a sense of humor (and some courage) is a
big help when working for this most serious
cause. To get that dye flowing, please go to
Faye’s individual RFL page at
QUOTATION OF THE WEEK
“In disasters such as this, it is always
nice to have a place where you can go to
relax, unwind, and refuel, a place for the
rescue workers as well as victims to call
home and talk to their loved ones, take a
for at least a short time.”
