Leicester flips script on Bartlett with 34-6 win
BY DAVID DORE
SPORTS STAFF WRITER
LEICESTER — Nearly a year to
the day after losing to the Indians
34-7, Leicester earned its sixth victory
of the 2012 season Friday, Oct.
26 against Bartlett by almost the
same score — 34-6.
“We were emotionally ready for
this game,” Leicester head coach
Timothy Griffiths said. “Obviously
they were too. We played them in
the playoffs. They beat us up pretty
good in the regular season last
year.”
On their way to a Central
Massachusetts Division 5 Super
Bowl title last December, the
Wolverines met Bartlett in the
semifinals — and Leicester won.
Going against the defending
Super Bowl champions on their
home field, Bartlett head coach
Dane Labossionniere said it was
important to keep up with
Leicester the entire contest if the
Indians hoped to win.
“We didn’t bring it for four quarters,”
he said. “We brought it for a
quarter or two, and it just kind of
fell apart on us.”
Bartlett stopped the Wolverines
on their first offensive drive after
allowing a big run to Leicester
quarterback Drew Mazzeo to the
Bartlett 18. Leicester’s defense did
its job, too, halting the Indians’
ensuing drive.
The Indians’ James Patterson (35) turns the corner and heads down the sideline in
the second quarter.
The Wolverines would end up on
the Bartlett 18-yard line again after
a couple of runs. Nick Kenneway
found the end zone after four
straight runs — the final one from 2
yards out — to put Leicester up 7-0.
Bartlett responded with a score of
its own on a drive that took half of
the second quarter. Faced with a
fourth and goal on the Leicester 27,
thanks to a couple of penalties and
a run that went backward, quarterback
Ricky Spooner threw the ball
to Akeem Belnavis in the end zone.
Belnavis jumped up to retrieve it,
and came down with it. A failed
two-point conversion would shrink
Leicester’s lead to 7-6.
From that point on the Indians
would not score again, while
Leicester scored on a 66-yard run
by Mazzeo in the second quarter, a
23-yard interception by Keem
Minton and a 23-yard run by Tom
Rodrick in the third, and an 11-yard
run by Ryan McKay with about a
minute left in the game.
“We didn’t have the ball much in
the first half,” Griffiths said,
“because they had some long sustained
drives. We just needed the
ball more. We needed to get off the
field defensively because I knew
they were going to have trouble
stopping us offensively. That was
the key, just getting off the field.
Getting a couple three-and-outs is
huge.”
“Their [offensive] line was so
physical tonight,” Labossionniere
said. “Their [defensive] line played
great. And they got it done for
them. Hats off to those guys. Their
big guys really got the job done.”
Leicester will take its 6-2 record
into Saturday’s game at Uxbridge;
Bartlett (3-5) will play Friday night
at David Prouty, where
Labossionniere was an assistant
coach until taking over in Webster.
Young Pirates’ offense struggles to click in loss to Rams
BY JON GOUIN
SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD —
H o s t i n g
Northbridge High
is a tall task for
anyone, but it may
not even be the
toughest task for
the Oxford High
football team in the
next two weeks.
Oxford, who is now
1-7 after losing 33-0
to the Rams, will
next host a
Shepherd Hill team
that thrashed
Northbridge 42-27
just a week prior.
In the Oct. 26
game with
Northbridge, the
Rams scored on
their first play
from scrimmage, a
double-pass for 58
yards as they never
Oxford quarterback Matt Faucher
leaps and throws the ball down the
field.
looked back.
Despite a no-quit
attitude and gutsy
performance by
the young Oxford squad, they just couldn’t
keep up with the Rams’ high-powered aerial
attack.
“We know Northbridge [now 7-1] is a really
good team and we just wanted to see [our
team] match their level and really try to play
up to them today,” regarded head coach Mike
Adams of his expectations and of his team’s
effort. “I think we had moments where we
did, and then some moments where we didn’t.”
Sophomore quarterback Matt Faucher (7
for 17, 90 yards, 1 interception) was the focal
point of the Pirates’ offense, and though at
times he struggled against the Rams, the
team is in capable hands moving forward.
“[He] is really picking it up and performing
well. He’s stepping up and playing a big role
there,” said Adams of his team’s offensive
leader.
Faucher also played good defense, intercepting
Northbridge backup quarterback
Rob Fraser early in the second half, but the
Pirates
could
away during a 33-0 victory for the Rams.
do little to move the ball. In all, the defense
forced three turnovers — a fumble recovery
and two interceptions) — and blocked two
Northbridge extra point tries.
“We have Tyler Barrie back at safety who’s
become a really good help just getting down
to the defense and making the right calls,
helping us out,” said Adams of his defensive
leader.
Another bright spot for the Pirates was a
lack of mental mistakes, being called for zero
penalties in the game.
The tough road for Oxford continues,
though, and after Shepherd Hill on Nov. 2 the
Pirates round out their 2012 schedule at
Leicester (6-2) and versus Auburn (8-0) on
Thanksgiving. The hopes will be for progression
and maturation of the team’s young
nucleus, and if so, the Pirates will be significantly
improved in 2013.
Oxford’s Matt Faucher kicks off to start the game against visiting Northbridge, which would end in a 33-
0 loss.
When it wasn’t quarterback Matt Faucher running the ball, he was handing it to junior halfback Zack
Gorczynski for modest gains versus Northbridge.
