OUTSTANDING SUCCESS IN SEOUL<br />
Mermaid’s first visit to in South Korea during the Summer<br />
of 2008 attracted close to 9,000 spectators at the elegant<br />
Baekham Art Hall in central Seoul.<br />
Extensive media coverage and bookstore seminars insured<br />
widespread exposure for the company’s fifty performances,<br />
which were offered in both English and Korean. As<br />
principal spokesperson for the Theatre, Jim Morrow<br />
undertook a busy schedule of personal appearances yet<br />
found time to enjoy the city’s vibrant cultural life. Touring<br />
company members included Mermaid veterans Jesse<br />
MacLean and Jeff Schwager, and stage manager Alexie<br />
Lalonde-Steedman.<br />
The Korean-language version features the voice of Sin Ae-ra,<br />
who ranks among Korea’s most popular performers. Often<br />
in the headlines for her diverse media and film activities,<br />
she and her celebrity actor husband Cha In-pyo are known<br />
for their philanthropy, usually related to the well-being of<br />
children. She attended the show with her family.<br />
Immediately upon the company’s return in mid-August,<br />
negotiations began for a return engagement at the invitation<br />
of Phoenix Arts Management.<br />
MERMAID CATERPILLAR MILESTONES<br />
• Mermaid Theatre will participate in celebrations marking<br />
the Fortieth Anniversary of THE VERY HUNGRY<br />
CATERPILLAR’s publication with special appearances at<br />
two major US children’s festivals. The company will offer<br />
performances at the Seattle International Children’s Festival<br />
and the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival in<br />
St. Paul, MN during May 2009, as well as visit the Myles<br />
Reif Performing Arts Center Theatre in Grand Rapids,<br />
MN for the first time.<br />
• First published in 1969, THE VERY HUNGRY<br />
CATERPILLAR has sold more than 29 million copies<br />
worldwide, and has appeared in 47 languages.<br />
• Simultaneously, Mermaid will celebrate the Tenth Anniversary<br />
of its collaboration with Eric Carle Studios. THE<br />
VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR & THE VERY<br />
QUIET CRICKET had its debut performance at the Kids<br />
On the Waterfront Festival in Dartmouth, NS in May<br />
1999.<br />
CATERPILLAR RETURNS TO SINGAPORE<br />
Colourful banners and posters appeared throughout<br />
Seoul to promote Mermaid’s month-long<br />
engagement.<br />
The Caterpillar will return to Singapore for a third<br />
engagement under the auspices of Act 3 International,<br />
producers of the highly respected Prudential First<br />
International Children’s Festival. The company will<br />
present fourteen performances at the elegant Victoria<br />
Theatre during November 2008. Company members<br />
include Mermaid veteran performers Suzy Crocker and<br />
Jesse MacLean, and Mermaid’s senior stage manager, Lisa<br />
Cochran.<br />
