OUTSTANDING SUCCESS IN SEOUL
Mermaid’s first visit to in South Korea during the Summer
of 2008 attracted close to 9,000 spectators at the elegant
Baekham Art Hall in central Seoul.
Extensive media coverage and bookstore seminars insured
widespread exposure for the company’s fifty performances,
which were offered in both English and Korean. As
principal spokesperson for the Theatre, Jim Morrow
undertook a busy schedule of personal appearances yet
found time to enjoy the city’s vibrant cultural life. Touring
company members included Mermaid veterans Jesse
MacLean and Jeff Schwager, and stage manager Alexie
Lalonde-Steedman.
The Korean-language version features the voice of Sin Ae-ra,
who ranks among Korea’s most popular performers. Often
in the headlines for her diverse media and film activities,
she and her celebrity actor husband Cha In-pyo are known
for their philanthropy, usually related to the well-being of
children. She attended the show with her family.
Immediately upon the company’s return in mid-August,
negotiations began for a return engagement at the invitation
of Phoenix Arts Management.
MERMAID CATERPILLAR MILESTONES
• Mermaid Theatre will participate in celebrations marking
the Fortieth Anniversary of THE VERY HUNGRY
CATERPILLAR’s publication with special appearances at
two major US children’s festivals. The company will offer
performances at the Seattle International Children’s Festival
and the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival in
St. Paul, MN during May 2009, as well as visit the Myles
Reif Performing Arts Center Theatre in Grand Rapids,
MN for the first time.
• First published in 1969, THE VERY HUNGRY
CATERPILLAR has sold more than 29 million copies
worldwide, and has appeared in 47 languages.
• Simultaneously, Mermaid will celebrate the Tenth Anniversary
of its collaboration with Eric Carle Studios. THE
VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR & THE VERY
QUIET CRICKET had its debut performance at the Kids
On the Waterfront Festival in Dartmouth, NS in May
1999.
CATERPILLAR RETURNS TO SINGAPORE
Colourful banners and posters appeared throughout
Seoul to promote Mermaid’s month-long
engagement.
The Caterpillar will return to Singapore for a third
engagement under the auspices of Act 3 International,
producers of the highly respected Prudential First
International Children’s Festival. The company will
present fourteen performances at the elegant Victoria
Theatre during November 2008. Company members
include Mermaid veteran performers Suzy Crocker and
Jesse MacLean, and Mermaid’s senior stage manager, Lisa
Cochran.
