Philips Vari-Lite has produced the most innovative spot and wash
luminaires available. In fact, we develop luminaires so powerful,
they provide more than just light. They’ve become a way to express
your imagination; a way to make your vision a reality.
We draw from our years of experience to produce technologically
advanced, eco-friendly and high performance tools for expressing your
creativity, and it is our “technical creative soul” that has kept Philips
Vari-Lite at the forefront of the automated lighting industry since
1981. The company was founded on the belief that creative engineering
can join with creative lighting to bring a new dimension to any
performance or presentation.
That notion first took root in the late ‘70s when engineers developed
a color changing light fixture using dichroic filters and later added two
motors to make the light move as well. Genesis wowed the world with
the first VARI*LITE Series 100 system consisting of 50 VL1 luminaires on
the opening night of their “Abacab” tour on September 25, 1981, and it
was also the “Genesis” of Vari-Lite the company.
Inspired by the magic of moving light and changing color, Vari-Lite set
about creating complete lighting systems that add both subtle nuance
and brilliant spectacle to any event. In November 2002, Vari-Lite was
purchased by the Genlyte Thomas Group LLC, and in November 2007,
Royal Philips Electronics purchased the Genlyte Group, along with
Vari-Lite, creating Philips Vari-Lite.
Today, Philips Vari-Lite continues to lead the world in automated lighting
technology while drawing upon the vast resources of Royal Philips
