WELCOME
The commencement of school can be daunting for any child at any level. The move into Senior School may
be a particularly anxious moment for both students and first-time parents. St Aloysius’ College recognises
this, and hopes to make the transition to a new school a smooth and trouble-free one.
Senior schooling aims to teach students to participate fully in their education and become independent
learners. Therefore, there is a need for all students to be responsible for gathering necessary information
from various sources. There are a number of occasions, such as assemblies, where information is
communicated verbally, so students need to pay careful attention. Students need to also consult the
appropriate noticeboards and digital screens.
YEAR 7, 2014 ORIENTATION (STUDENTS ONLY)
An orientation programme for all students entering Year 7, 2014 occurs on Wednesday,
30 October from 8.30am-12.40pm at the Senior School Campus (47 Upper Pitt Street).
◊
◊
Your son will meet with various members of staff and be given a preview of how classes function in
the Senior School. He will also have a chance to meet the current St Aloysius’ Year 6 students (his
classmates for 2014).
Students are to wear their current 2013 school uniform. They may bring a snack for recess or may use
our school canteen.
YEARS 8 TO 11, 2014 NEW STUDENTS
On the first day of school (Wednesday, 29 January 2014) new students are to go to the
Senior School Reception at 8.00am so as to meet their respective Year Co-ordinators.
St Aloysius’ College 3 Senior School New Student Information

COMMUNICATION
◊
The Student Supervisor and Year Co-ordinator will address all new students on the first day with
information on procedures with which students need to be familiar. This includes such matters as
transport passes, bounds, uniform requirements, sick bay, canteen, etc.
◊
The Year Co-ordinator will record messages on his noticeboard and whiteboard. There are digital
display screens throughout the school. These are updated regularly with information on daily activities
and sports training. It is the responsibility of each student to read these noticeboards and be aware of
the latest information.
◊
Year and individual ID photos are taken in the first week of school.
◊
Morning assemblies - know as ‘line-up’ are held twice per week in the Senior School.
◊
Year Co-Ordinators will be the first port of call for all student and parental queries and concerns, as well
as daily administration, including attendance and absence.
MANRESA
All students in the Senior School will have an iPad to assist with their school work. iPads will be progressively
distributed before the commencement of term. Parents will be invited to attend a session with their son
to receive their iPad and undergo initial training. Student usernames, logins and passwords will be made
available from this time. As well as assisting students with their work, the use of mobile technology in the
College has given rise to a more powerful information source in the College’s intranet, known as Manresa.
It is essential students and parents familiarise themselves with Manresa and access it regularly as it stores
so much relevant material for both Curriculum and Co-curricula activities and events. Throughout the early
part of Year 7, all homeroom classes are continually provided with training to ensure Manresa’s potential is
fully realised by all families.
St Aloysius’ College 4 Senior School New Student Information

Here are a few tips for the new student, which we hope will make the move to St Aloysius’ College Senior
School enjoyable and stress-free.
BEFORE THE DAY
All Senior School students have a locker in or near their homeroom. Year 7 to 10 lockers are inside the
homeroom and Years 11 to 12 are outside the classrooms in nearby corridors. Each student needs to
purchase a combination padlock from the Uniform Shop. It is a good idea to practice at home locking and
unlocking this padlock before starting school. Instructions and a combination number will be included in the
pack.
All items of school uniform and personal items such as texts and workbooks should be clearly labelled with
the student’s name. Also, place a luggage label with the student’s name on his schoolbag as all students
use the same style of College schoolbag.
Students are to arrive at school for an 8.30am start, so should familiarise themselves with transport routes,
timetables, etc.
On the first day, Year Co-ordinators will explain the morning roll call. New students will be issued with ID
cards during first term, which will enable them to ‘swipe in’ when they arrive at school, therefore updating
the attendance roll. Lessons commence at 8.35am.
BOOKLISTS
Years 7-11 booklists will be available late in Term IV at: www.campion.com.au. Please peruse the booklist
very carefully and make sure you tick all the required items (ensuring you include the compulsory
Hotmaths levy to be paid to Campion).
Textbook orders are to be submitted online.
SECOND HAND BOOK SALE
A second hand book sale, organised by the Parents’ & Friends’ Association, is held at the end of each year
for Years 7-12 books only. Current students may sell their books (if applicable for the following year) and
second hand books may be purchased.
As new St Aloysius’ parents, you are most welcome to attend. The sale will be held this year on Saturday,
7 December from 9.00am in the Canisius Room on the Senior School Campus. Please be early, as
books sell quickly. Payment is by cash or cheque only.
UNIFORMS
New students need to make an appointment with the Uniform Shop on 9955 4193 for the fitting of their
uniform. Information regarding the Uniform Shop as well as a price list is available at:
www.staloysius.nsw.edu.au/uniformshop.
THE FIRST DAY …
◊
All students should arrive at school by 8.20am and wait in the Courtyard until the first bell at 8.30am.
An announcement will be made advising students to move to Assembly areas. Once there, Year Coordinators
will distribute timetables and diaries, and allocate lockers.
◊
Please bring an A4 exercise book for each subject, some pens and pencils and as many of your
textbooks as your son can for the first day. It is not necessary to bring them all. The remaining textbooks
can be brought in over the first few days. Once your son knows his timetable, he can plan for which
books to bring, and which to keep at home or in his locker.
◊
The Canteen will operate on the first day. Students will be instructed on the procedures for using the
Canteen and ordering lunches.
Daily Notices - Manresa Bulletin
Throughout the College Campus, including the Year 7 Corridor, there are display screens which provide
daily student news for all year levels. These may also communicate last minute training changes. The
digital displays are referred to as Manresa Bulletin.
St Aloysius’ College 6 Senior School New Student Information

RESPECT
St Aloysius’ College has long held a tradition of respect and courtesy between staff and students which is
a distinctive feature of the school culture. Respect and courtesy for all members of the College community
is exercised in the way one greets staff and adults as well as peers. Staff should always be addressed
formally by their title – ‘Father’, ‘Sir’ or ‘Miss’ – and name – eg ‘Fr Jones’, ‘Mr Smith’, ‘Miss/Mrs Brown’.
Similarly, it is always appropriate to offer an exchange of greeting with any adult, and to approach people
requiring assistance.
Simple acts of respect such as standing to one side in a doorway, holding a door open, offering to help carry
items, are acts of courtesy which St Aloysius’ College expects of its students.
Similarly, respect among the student body involves a recognition of boundaries with older and younger
students. It also involves the use of appropriate language and addressing students by their first name and
no tolerance for any acts of harassment or bullying.
LITURGIES
The College observes all significant feast days in the Church calendar. There are many liturgies celebrated
throughout the school year which involve our students.
Parents, relatives and friends are always welcome at Junior and Senior School Masses and liturgies. Details
appear in the College iDiary. Mass is celebrated daily in the College Chapel at 8.05am and on Wednesdays
at 8.05am in the Junior School Chapel. Senior School liturgies involve all of Years 7 to 12 as well as staff,
while Junior School liturgies are for Years 3 to 6.
iDIARY APP
All students in Years 7 to 12 receive an iDiary App on their iPad which replaces the traditional homework
diary. It holds all timetable as well as calendar information, student policies, records and achievements as
well as providing an opportunity to record all home study. The iDiary was designed by Aloysius students
specifically to support their study needs and is regularly supported and updated. Student notices and
announcements, as well as the College newsletter, the Gonzagan, are communicated through the iDiary
App.
St Aloysius’ College 7 Senior School New Student Information

HOME STUDY
Good study habits are not acquired overnight and regular home study is one way of developing a
student’s ability to use his study time constructively. Sound study skills lead to self discipline and
organisation. Thus, the College has developed a policy to ensure there is adequate attention paid
to developing these skills. It is the expectation of the College that all teachers will set homework on
a regular basis. The form this will take may vary according to the skills and content material being
assessed at the time. It is also true that some homework tasks may be completed at school during
the school day.
Students are to record the day and date for submission of written homework and for the checking
of assigned revision in their iDiary App. Parents are encouraged to check the iDiary and make
comments in the space provided. Homeroom teachers for Year 7 will monitor iDiary use often and
use it to communicate with parents, as will subject teachers for Years 8-12. The role of parents is an
important one. They should see that the student is working towards setting good home study habits.
A quiet, well equipped place, free from interruptions and distractions, coupled with enough quality
time, should be conducive for developing these good habits.
Below is a schedule of approximate daily home study times for various years, bearing in mind the
nature and style of home study set will vary from subject to subject:
Year 7
Year 8
Year 9
Year 10
Year 11
2 hours written work; 3 hours revision (6 hours on weekend)
3 hours written work; 3 hours revision (6 hours on weekend)
Students in Years 7-9 attend study skills workshops to assist students in organisation, home study
and assignments. The College subscribes to an online handbook for study skills, the password for
this is given to students once they commence at the College.
ABSENCE & LATENESS
Students should, for the most part, arrive between 8.00am and 8.20am. Students are to swipe their
student card at their Year Co-ordinator’s office once they arrive at school. Year 7 students will be
issued with ID cards throughout Term I.
Students late to school must report to the Student Supervisor and present their iDiary for signing
if they cannot access their Year Co-ordinator’s office. Five late arrivals in one term results in a
detention.
Assistant Year Co-ordinators are responsible for the maintenance of the attendance register for each
year group. They need to be notified prior to 9.00am via telephone or email of an absence, for any
given day. Upon return to school, students must present their Year Co-ordinator with a written note
explaining the absence.
PHONE MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS
Phone messages for students should be for matters of great importance only.
St Aloysius’ College 8 Senior School New Student Information

MOBILE PHONES
The College asks students to minimise valuable items brought to school to ensure they are not lost or
misappropriated. If students do bring these items to school, they need to acknowledge responsibility
for them, both in ensuring the manner in which they are used is in keeping with the College’s defined
expectations, and secondly that they take care of those belongings to ensure their safety and security. In
regard to mobile telephones, while we acknowledge the need for students to possess them, as with most
schools, they are not to be used during the school day, and will be taken by teachers or Year Co-ordinators
if seen to be mis-used. It takes only self discipline and care to place phones on silent or switch them off and
access messages at the appropriate time. Parents can certainly assist in this regard by not telephoning
students directly via their personal mobile phone.
TUTOR GROUPS
In the Senior School, each of the four Houses of the College is divided
into approximately 15 Tutor Groups. Tutor Groups meet together weekly.
Each student is allocated to a Tutor Group on his arrival to the Senior
School. A Tutor, who is a Senior School teacher, is assigned to each group
and works with a vertical combination of students from Year 7 to Year 12.
This Tutor and the group remain together, in most instances, throughout
a student’s senior schooling. The Tutor is one of the significant adults at
St Aloysius’ who has a positive impact upon a student’s development. In
keeping with the Jesuit philosophy of ‘cura personalis’, individual care, the
Tutor monitors and encourages the overall development of each student
in the Tutor Group.
On most occasions, students will be placed in the same tutor group as
their brothers. If for any reason this is not the preferred option, or if there
are any other special considerations of which the school should be aware,
parents are asked to advise either Mrs Margaret Loomes, Head of Student
Formation or the Registrar.
COLLEGE STATEMENT ON INCIDENTAL LEAVE
There will be occasions when prevailing family circumstances may lead to parents seeking some form of
approved leave from school for a nominated period of time. All such requests are to be made in writing
directly to the College Principal using the online form “Application for Exemption from Attendance at
School” available via the College intranet, Manresa (refer page 4 for further information). These requests
will be considered on an individual basis by the Principal and permission granted based on compassionate,
family circumstances. Please note that all such requests are filed and need to be submitted to government
authorities, if required.
With respect to late or early leave from term, our request is that parents are mindful of the fact that our
holidays are consistent with AHISA (Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia) guidelines.
In setting our dates, we consult with Monte Sant’ Angelo, Loreto Kirribilli and St Vincent’s Potts Point, as
well as Saint Ignatius’ College. Extending holidays to take advantage of cheaper air fares is not a valid
reason for a request, given the already generous amount of holidays allowed for our schools.
All requests for incidental leave must be made well in advance, in writing, and addressed to the College
Principal, for his consideration, using the apporpriate online forms.
TRAVEL PASSES
A change in school, including moving from St Aloysius’ Junior School to the Senior School in Year 7,
necessitates a new travel pass. An Application Form for Subsidised Travel and Update of Student
Details will need to be completed and returned to the Registrar. Please note the form has only one
part (Part A) and that an original printout needs to be returned to the Registrar (emailed or faxed
versions are not acceptable). If in doubt as to which mode of transport your son requires, you can ring: -
Transport infoline: 131 500 (6am – 10pm) 7 days or www.131500.com.au.
The correct information as to bus, train and ferry routes and timetables can be obtained from this number
and website.
For school buses, please use the website: http://www.sydneybuses.info/schools or alternatively contact
your nearest bus depot. The bus depot telephone numbers are:
Brookvale 9941 5816 Port Botany 9582 7614 Private Buses
Burwood 9582 4444 Randwick 9298 6711 Forest Coach Lines 9450 2277
Mona Vale 9997 1257 Willoughby 9941 9214 Caringbah 9524 6636
North Sydney 9245 5260
A separate form is required for each leg of the journey and mode of transport, eg if your son will travel
by bus and ferry, then you need to complete two application forms, or if your son will travel by private bus,
or a government bus to catch a train, then you also need two application forms. The afternoon journey must
be the same as the morning journey.
You cannot apply for two modes of transport for the same leg of the journey, ie if you have a CHOICE
between two modes of transport, you may only choose one. So compare timetables. Applications
will be returned to parents if you apply for both. For any activity before or after school, if the normal
mode of transport is not available, your son must pay his fare if travelling by a different route or
different mode of transport. He cannot apply for a travel pass for a different route for these days. If
your son catches a bus other than the one his ticket is programmed for, he must pay the fare.
Ferry applications: Check ferry timetables morning and afternoon. Co-curricular activity often makes the
bus/train option more suitable. To apply, attach a letter of justification to the ferry application form. The
Ministry of Transport takes approx three months to approve or reject ferry applications. Meanwhile, unless
you intend paying the ferry fare, apply for the alternative bus/ferry passes as well.
Note: If you have another son who is a CURRENT 2013 St Aloysius’ College student, his travel pass will
automatically be renewed, so no need to complete a new form for him. However, current St Aloysius’
Year 6 students do need to apply for a new travel pass and information regarding this will be handed out
to them at school.
If parents live at separate addresses and you wish to apply for travel to both residences, Transport for
NSW requires a copy of the Family Law Court ruling or if the matter has not gone to the Court a statutory
declaration from each parent specifying the time share arrangements for the student (for more information
refer to Additional Instructions - Joint/Dual Custody on the Application form). Otherwise the application will
be rejected by the Ministry of Transport.
Completed and signed application forms need to be sent back to the Registrar by Monday 14 October
2013. If it is left until the Christmas holidays your son’s pass may not be ready for the commencement of
2014. Travel passes will be sent to the College and distributed to the students early in Term I. For
the first few weeks of school in Term I, students can travel without a pass, as often there are processing
delays due to the large number of applications at the beginning of each school year. However, if your son
has not received his pass by mid February, he should carry some money with him in case he needs to pay
his fare until his pass arrives.
ensure that every student has a holistic education. All students are expected to be fully committed to
the co-curricular life of the College. Sport is the main co-curricular activity and an important element in
the overall curriculum of the College. Students are also encouraged to participate in a wide range of cocurricular
students to participate but they are strongly encouraged to do so.
Cadets, Debating, Chess, Benenson Society, Snowsports, St Vincent de Paul and Tournament of Minds
will not be exempted due to work commitments or because they are playing for a club, or in a district
competition.
Any student physically unable to participate in co-curricular activities may be called upon to assist in other
co-curricular duties.
COLLEGE CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SPORTING EVENTS
Players
◊
Never argue with an official. If there is
a disagreement, the captain or coach
approaches the official during a break or after
the game.
◊ Control your temper. Verbal
or physical abuse of officials
or other players, deliberately fouling
or provoking an opponent, or throwing
equipment, is not acceptable or permitted in
any sport.
◊ Work equally hard for yourselves
and your team. Team and individual
performances will benefit.
◊
◊
Be good sports. You should cheer all
good play whether it be by the school or
the opposing team.
Treat all players as you would like to be
treated. Do not interfere with, bully or
take unfair advantage of another player.
◊ Co-operate with the coach, teammates
and opponents. Without them there
would be no game.
